The only time this came up was when I applied for graduate school, at one specific school in the northeast that was rather academic. I'm not saying aim for a bad GPA. But when you graduate, most of the instances I have known about and gotten advice about, no one cares about your grades.

Me, I hated high school, couldn't wait to GTFO. I didn't even go home during the summer after freshman year. Nothing left for me there outside of the Browns.

Me cracking? I'm not going to make her come home.

To anyone else saying GPA doesn't matter, it must depend on the field apparently. In mine (and pick6's I think) field of acct, you don't get an interview under 3.5 or so. Too many applicants to have a mediocre GPA, in any field.

You went to a shitty school, so GPA above 3.5 is a pre req to even get a look at of your resume. Hope this helps little guy.

..and you went to which school again? I beat out kids from the almighty OSU and Miami (OH) during the interview process. And 3.5 isnt a pre-req, considering mine is below. Please keep talking in which you have no clue about.

I guess the concept of your GPA mattering when it is literally you vs every other student with neither having career related experience is too hard to grasp for some.

No, no we all should listen to the little guy who has been working for AT BEST 3 months for an accounting firm that isn't part of the big 4. He clearly knows everything and anything about the professional world.

Not to mention an Akron grad trying to brag about his intellect and how he beat out other students, yet he can't even write a smug response with proper sentence structure. LOL

This is my point exactly. You claim that GPA matters, but have below a 3.5. That's good for you, but it's not something that should be said that "GPA matters."

There MANY people out there who have above a 3.5 GPA and are still unemployed or looking for other jobs. In the end, you have to have something or somethings on your resume that set you apart from other applicants. For some, maybe it is a high GPA. For others, maybe it's clubs or activities. And for others, it's having someone make a call or send an email for you.

I am not discouraging getting a high GPA, by no means. But, I have yet to really see where the GPA truly matters in job interviews. I've been looking around at jobs for 6-7 years now and not one time has anyone asked me about my GPA from undergrad or either graduate degree I have obtained. Nor have I heard from any and all my friends about their GPA being mentioned. Heck, my wife graduated Summa Cum Laude and had a hard time getting a job in multiple states -- and our school was the best education school in the state it was in.

There are many people at top tier in certain fields, for example law (read, T14 law schools) that can't find jobs. My guess is that the number of graduates jobless from my alma mater is around 33% for the class of '13. Overall, fewer than half of law school graduates find jobs that pay "lawyer" wages.

Exactly! And...that's with a graduate school degree (a JD even).

So an undergrad GPA isn't nearly as emphasized as what some may think. Master's...it's the new Bachelor's.

GPA does matter. No reputable public accounting firm is going to take a second look at some kid who doesnt have enough work ethic to maintain above a 3.0.

You arent saying anything that I havent said.

where did I say in my initial post that only GPA matters? I specifically listed other attributes that are factored in as well. A Master's doesnt mean shit in the public accounting world. You start at the same salary at large firms regardless if you have a master's or bachelors. (For those of you who need it spelled out, I am talking students with NO PRIOR WORK EXPERIENCE). A CPA is the only thing that really matters to advance in your career.

As for lawyers, MB, please look at my initial post where I said majoring in a field with demand is important as well. I laugh at the buffoons who go 100+k in debt only to go into a field with 112% unemployment/underemployment.

*Please remember I am speaking from personal experience as well as other peers about to finish or just finishing college before we try to make gross over-generalizations

Here is a link of professionals discussing GPA requirements when looking for interns: Figured I'd post for COA and his buddy to see that firms require minimum GPAs at other places than shitty Akron. lulz. http://goingconcern.com/2011/9/are-the-big-4-starting-to-demand-higher-gpas-from-new-recruits

All I was saying is that GPA doesn't really matter. And I have yet to encounter one person who was asked about an undergrad GPA for jobs, ever. You would be the first.

If I need to spell it out, students are DUMB for going 4 years of undergrad without getting some sort of experience in their field and/or prospective career. Which, is most likely the case with any major and student. So, if anyone goes 4 years (or more) of undergrad with getting NO experience...that's their own fault.
