1 - No
2 - Yes, a little
3 - 1.5 hours

As a freshman, I would travel home about every 2 weeks. I didn't have a job, didn't have any money, so I'd take all my laundry home to wash it, etc. I mostly got homesick b/c I missed friends. Not so much my family. The trips home grew thinner. I never spent a summer home. Once I left HS, the most time I spent home was 6 months after graduation before landing my big boy job.

Always lol'd at the kids who would go back every weekend for a girl back home.

Really? You're in a small town ( in my case) with thousands of women. But you're going to leave to go bang a girl in high school still living with her parents?!

It helped that two of my brothers also went to the same school, and I roomed with a friend. We shared a suite with four other girls, and I made friends very quickly. I still went home about once a month to see my then-boyfriend, do laundry, etc. My mom cried every single time I left, but she is a sap. I also went home to work for two summers, and then lived in Toledo full-time the last four years I was there/after I was out of school. My parents moved and were 2.5 hours away, which made trips home few and far between. I think I went home three or four times/year after that.

I ended up being in Toledo for six years total. It was really hard to leave my friends, but it was for the best. I actually lived with my parents for four years after that, and it was fucking awesome. People seem to look down on it, but it was a great decision for me.

There is nothing to do in Lima, OH. Our campus was a ghost town on the weekends. Everyone went back home.

Try having a DI scream at you for the first 12 hours of college with zero sleep and plenty of chaos. That was my first college experience.

1. Maybe. Don't know that I was thinking about it. Was just glad to be getting out of there and into a new place. Figured I might miss seeing my parents regularly, but didn't figure I'd miss anything else.

2. No. After that first couple quarters freshman year, I stopped even coming home during weekends to visit and the only time I did from there on was to go to a friend's wedding. Made good friends, always had something to do in Athens, so anyone else could wait until summer or winter break to see me.

3. 2.5 to 3 hours.

When you went off to college:

1. Did you think you would be homesick?

2. Did you end up being homesick or transfer closer to home?

3. How far away did you go from home?
1. No, never.
2. I actually stayed close to home for my first year then transferred farther away. Never got homesick.
3. I was 4.5 hours from home.

No kids and not planning on having any for a few years. If you are worried encourage her to get involved in stuff on campus. I know that was something that really help me was just playing a sport in college.

Did not get homesick. More like sick of home. I went to a community college my first year and decided I needed to get out of the area. Went to school 2 hours away, so its not a bad drive home. I go home maybe once every month to six weeks. Was maybe home a week total this summer. I still maintain friendships from high school. I went to Akron not knowing anybody, and have made my best friends here.

From personal and recent peer observations, there are jobs available. Many people just dont want to take them (ex. insurance). There are good jobs available if you do the right things. Maintain a decent GPA, join major related clubs, network, and most importantly...pick a major that has some demand in the field. Oh yeah, having somewhat of a personality might help as well. I've heard of top students getting passed on because they are just awkward weirdos.

This was not asked at all during job interviews.

The only time this came up was when I applied for graduate school, at one specific school in the northeast that was rather academic. I'm not saying aim for a bad GPA. But when you graduate, most of the instances I have known about and gotten advice about, no one cares about your grades.

I'm speaking in terms of on-campus recruiting where you are competing with every other student. For my job, if my GPA falls below a 3.0, they can withdraw the offer. Same people who say "C's get degrees" are the ones looking after they graduate.

I've been at Kentucky for 5 years now. My first year I went home for Thanksgiving, Christmas, spring break, and summer. Sophomore year I went home for Christmas and my parents came to a basketball game and a football game. Since then I have been home for Christmas and about a week per summer, and my parents come down for a game or two a year. I call home about once a week to keep my mom happy. I love my parents to death but I've never been homesick in the slightest.

Agreed if you add good/marketable degree. OP said daughter is doing pharmacy, so she will have no problem finding a job. To anyone else saying GPA doesn't matter, it must depend on the field apparently. In mine (and pick6's I think) field of acct, you don't get an interview under 3.5 or so. Too many applicants to have a mediocre GPA, in any field.
