Anyway, the whole key is to hit the sales where you can get 30-40% off designer labels...then these items become "reasonably" affordable. It's tougher for shirts because they're usually picked over, but for suits and shoes, even jeans, it's the only way to go.
Go to Jos A Banks and buy 1 suit get 29 suits free.

Bought a pair of 7's once. Think I dropped about $90-120 on 'em. Best pair of jeans I've ever purchased. Can't even tell you the # of compliments I've received from the ladies wearing 'em. In fact, it's getting damn near time to replace them, and I fully intend on buying another pair -- and yes, I'm willing to drop another $100 or so on 'em.

Sure, and I think we're on the same page. But I guess my point is that I see plenty of people who want to overspend on a nice suit when they're better off just dropping 10 lbs and adding 50 to their bench press.

A guy in great shape in a cheap suit will almost always look better than a fat guy in an expensive suit. Since most of us can't afford a $2000 suit, we're better off just getting in shape.

Besides, for a guy to look good, things like hair, teeth, overall fitness are the low-hanging fruit to look good. And off-the-rack suits at places like Macy's will be "good enough" for virtually everyone on the OC, I think.

If you're in the small segment of the population that is both in-shape and rich, the more expensive suit is worth it. Wait for Brooks Bros. annual sale and stock up.

It is not often that I need to wear a suit, but when I do it is my navy Italian wool ensemble from The Ludlow Shop by J.Crew. Cost: Under $500. The best fitting suit I have ever owned and extremely reasonable in price compared to more ridiculous high-end brands that, like FanFromTexas alluded to earlier, the common person never has a need for anyway.

I am a religious fan of Ralph Lauren, but when it comes to suits and blazers, all of my needs are met perfectly by J.Crew. They make the perfect suit.

Lol. I'm pretty sure they had a buy one shirt get a car deal once. The ads on TV are almost pathetic they are so desperate.

I like to buy ties in there, though. They have some great designs and the quality is superb for the price.

Ties are fine at Jos A Bank - but the suits are what you pay for (buy get a bunch free). They seem to wear out after a year or so.

There are two things I don't skimp on. Toilet paper and clothing. I still have a Hickey Freeman suit that I bought ten years ago. It cost a bit more, but in the long run an $800 suit that lasts that long and is more economical than a $200 suit that has to be replaced in a couple of years.

I agree with this. I'll spend a little more now to not replace it later.
