If the claim of him being stupid is correct, it would make sense that he wouldn't understand, at least.

I retract my statement. My new vote goes to Bill Simmons. He's said a lot of dumb shit, but this is the most recent

"I didn’t realize the effect [the MLK shooting] had on that city…I think from people we talk to and stuff we’ve read, the shooting kind of set the tone with how the city thinks about stuff. We were at Game 3. Great crowd, they fall behind, and the whole crowd got tense. It was like, 'Oh no, something bad's gonna happen.' And I think it starts from that shooting."

Yeah, I'm sure MLK was on the fans minds at a basketball game against San Antonio.

Indefensibly stupid, but I don't think that's douchey.

Here's some more fuel to add to wghfan's fire-lol

LeBron James was fined $5K for flopping in Game 4 against the Pacers, which is less than half of the TAX he paid on a Vegas bar tab from 2011.

He is not an athlete, but he def has become douche. I used to like his stuff, but just like Rick Reilly he has become a caricature of himself. He blocked me on twitter, because I hurt his feelz.

He's still in pro sports even though he's not an athlete and he is still a huge douche bag. I actually think guys like Simmons, Reilly, Wilbon, Kornheiser, Stephen A., the entire cast or around the horn, etc. etc. are bigger douche bags than the athletes.

I wonder if it's one of those things where when a columnist gets more importance beyond that job that it starts to go to their head.

Watching a basketball crowd get nervous during a basketball game and immediately jumping to some sort of "It's all about the MLK shooting" leap of faith isn't the sort of thing a normal mind does. But an "I'm super-important now and have to make up something that sounds pithy and insightful!" mindset does do things like that.

I remember I used to love Reilly's SI column for a while. But at some point, he started doing that same thing where he tried to make some greater sociological leap about everything he was writing. Around the time of Columbine, I think, was when he got really bad.

You can't prove it, but I would say that is pretty much spot on. Deadspin a week ago showed examples of Reilly's writing pre-idiocy, and his shit was really fucking good.

It was mostly constant trolling, but the final straw was when I told him to limit his TV appearances, because his voice sounds like someone injected him with estrogen.
