Getting so worked up in the schedule argument is pointless. Teams only have so much control over who they schedule and can only do so much to make their schedule 'strong' in any given year when schedules are finalized years before they are even played. Some talk about Notre Dame more because of their independent status and freedom to schedule who they please but, even then, there's only so much Notre Dame can do to have a strong schedule in any given season.
I also agree with you that, other than USC, they have beaten their rivals. ND split with Michigan so that's a push. But take out USC and insert Ohio State and Michigan has had the same problem.
Notre Dame won 1 bowl game this decade and went to 5 of them. And lost 5 straight before that. I would say the point of bowl games is true. I will admit that OSU's bowl game record since 1994 hasn't been stellar (6-8) before anyone brings up OSU's recent bowl struggles.
