Potential bro. Cauley-Stein and Austin are 19. Payne is 23. A GM is going to look at that with enough ego and think in 4 years, he'll at minimum, get those guys to where Payne already is. Even better, lets say they really blossom at 21 or 22, guess what? You can re-sign them to a decent deal, because they are still "unproven."
It's kind of like what the Pistons will do with Andre Drummond and what the Clippers will do with DeAndre Jordan. Those guys are going to get paid, but it's not gonna cost a max contract to do so. Also, you give Jordan or Drummond an extension at 23 or 24, and they may still have 20% more potential to hit. Damian Lillard and Steph Curry? Both of those guys were extreme exceptions of older college players becoming great. Both of them will also cost max contracts, and it's hard to see either of them getting to another level.

Yeah, it's the same reason the entire lottery is going to be 18 and 19 year olds, haha.SportsAndLady;1578200 wrote:Yeah just looked at both of those. Okay so maybe not top 5 lol I didn't realize he grades out that low.
I think he's going to be a really good pro though.

WTF? Cauley-Stein over Payne? No way. Payne has much more upside. He has a face up/perimeter game and is decent on inside obviously, and will get better. Stein has hardly much at all in terms of offense. The major issue with Payne right now that will scare teams is his medical condition.Azubuike24;1578193 wrote:Payne turns 23 in a week. Name the last 23-year old big man draftee who did great in the NBA?
Also, you don't waste top 5 picks on players of that age. It's the extreme exception that it turns out good. I'd draft Isaiah Austin or Willie Cauley-Stein over Payne, and both of those guys have serious developing to do.
All that said, Stein may get drafted ahead of Payne. Personally think that will be a major mistake.

This confirms my original suspicions. The fan should be getting the brunt of the condemnation here, not Marcus Smart. Yeah, Smart shouldn't have escalated the situation, but I can't say I wouldn't have done the same in that scenario. It isn't like Smart was on the court, heard somebody yell something in the stands, and then stormed the bleachers looking for a fight. Smart was in the stands because his motion had propelled him there on a fast-break run out to stop a transition basket. As he was getting up, some asshole got in his space and called him a n----r. Fuck that guy.Azubuike24;1578100 wrote:KellyHinesTW: Radio analyst John Holcomb confirms what he said on air: He heard Marcus Smart say the fan called him the n-word.
Smart should get a two-game suspension and the issue should be resolved. It was a fucking push.

This was addressed back and forth in the earlier posts. S&L said he would take him in the top 5. I said if you're using a top 5 pick, I'd take a young guy (Austin or Stein, because they are similar build and position). Payne won't play his first NBA game until he's 4 months shy of his 24th birthday.
Show me the last center who became a star who was drafted at 23. It's astronomical odds against it. If you're talking top 5 pick...it's a joke to even consider.
You also missed the part where I linked mock drafts. Many mocks don't even have Austin or Stein even coming out because both have been woefully inconsistent and underwhelming. That still doesn't change my opinion that if I had to use a top 5 pick, I sure WOULD NOT take Payne.

I actually agree with this. As Laley pointed out earlier, though, the powers-that-be will probably want to make a statement here to discourage any future incidents such as this occurring, so I imagine a suspension of some sort will follow. However, the dramatic assholes at ESPN who are equating this to a terrorist attack and calling for a possible season-long suspension are absolutely wrong.SportsAndLady;1578134 wrote:I don't think he should be suspended at all. You have all the right in the world to shove a dude if he calls you a N*****.
And I hate Marcus smart
So, if Smart is to be suspended, it should be no more than one or two games. The fan from Texas Tech, however, should be banned from the arena for life.

Id be okay with a 2 game suspension. I mean he did push a fan. That alone deserves some sort of discipline. The people comparing this to what Ron artest did and asking for a season ending suspension, well they're just stupid.

Yeah, I think that's fair, considering the circumstances. A season ban would've been outrageous. The broadcaster from ESPNU who was calling for that as a possibility is comical. That guy overreacted from the minute it happened.
Still believe the fan should be suspended from all Texas Tech home games for at least the rest of the season. He instigated the entire thing.

Sounds like Marcus Smart is not only a hot head but a liar.
From the video of the camera man Smart ran into...
"You piece of crap."
I hear no racial epithet.

Also, I'd like to add that I don't support what the guy was doing. I'm all for heckling at sporting evens. But it's possible to do so without cursing at players. At least be intelligent about heckling.Fly4Fun;1578295 wrote:Sounds like Marcus Smart is not only a hot head but a liar.

Eat my crow about what? Obviously I and everyone else was talking about it assuming the n bomb was dropped. It's not like I was claiming that he said it and you were saying he wasn't. How the fuck do I know I wasn't there, I was just looking at tweets pointing to a racial slur being used.Fly4Fun;1578297 wrote:Also, I'd like to add that I don't support what the guy was doing. Unless Marcus admits to lying, I'll side with him. I believe he either heard a racial aspersion or thought he heard one. The fan was right near his face, so it's not as if the man would had to have yelled it loudly for everyone in the general vicinity to hear. Additionally, while I do not know for sure, I am guessing that the people in closest proximity to the man were acquaintances of his -- and his wife certainly isn't going to come out and say, "Oh, yes, he did call him a N-----."
I could be wrong, though. Nobody knows for certain. The mic didn't pick up everything. Regardless of that, is being called a piece of shit really any better? For his part in instigating the incident, the man should be punished in some variety (e.g. banned from the arena for the rest of the season). As we now know, he has been involved in prior altercations with opposing players.

Fly4Fun;1578089 wrote:I'm not claiming that fan is a saint or anything. I know absolutely nothing about him. But to jump to the conclusion that he must have dropped the n-bomb is a bit presumptuous. The guy was surrounded by women (most men behave better in women's company) and looks to have a non-white (possibly half-black or hispanic) woman behind him who doesn't react in a negative manner. Also, his teammate who was right there as hewas getting up would have heard it and we'd probably have reports about it by now.
Just because you think Smart is saying "Racist" doesn't mean something racist was actually said. Smart could think he was being racist just because he was an old white guy talking trash to a young black student.
Now again, I don't know anything about the guy but to just assume that he must have something racist is a bit much.
A season ending suspension almost seems like too much, but I could see the rationale behind it. Also, there are only 8 games left in the season (ignoring conference and post-season tournaments).
Ya, others were also saying the the n-bomb was dropped. But you specifically tried to say my 1st post was worthless when in the end it appears that I was spot on.SportsAndLady;1578101 wrote:Well there ya go. Makes Fly's long post worthless now.

The man was asked if he used a racial slur. He said something to the tune of "my mouth said something that I don't usually day and I apologize for that."
If he didn't use a racial slur, why wouldn't he simply respond with "I didn't use a racial slur."?

I said it was worthless because your post was talking about the N bomb not being used, then tweets came out basically confirming it was used. That's why I said your post is worthless. It was all in the assumption that the racial slurs were used.Fly4Fun;1578308 wrote:Ya, others were also saying the the n-bomb was dropped. Possibly to not draw more attention and controversy to the situation. He knew he said something wrong and admits as such and has said he won't attend games for the rest of the season.SportsAndLady;1578309 wrote:The man was asked if he used a racial slur. I'll give the man some credit for that. It's the right thing to do. And further evidence that he probably called Smart something far more sinister than a "piece of crap."Fly4Fun;1578311 wrote:I believe the fan said he would impose a self ban and not attend the rest of the games for the season.
