Not to nitpick and not that it matters, but OU was picked to be 3rd in their division. Not sure where 6th would come from seeing that the MAC is broken up into two divisions. I doubt they were picked by anyone as coming in last in their division of 6 teams.

So I just went off that. I guess they could be better than everyone in the other Division, but I for sure would put Toledo ahead of them. So at best 4th overall in the MAC.

I was looking forward to Saturday. Then I got booked Friday night for work in Columbus. Ill be sleeping all day till work on Saturday night. Probably DVR the OSU - Marquette game though.
Would love to see Marquette have like 60 fouls that game. I fucking hate the way they play. Them, Butler and Louisville can GFT with their bullshit that is called "great defense" for the last few years.

This is why, in the long run, the new style of officiating will be a plus for the game.

Not sure I agree with this. These players have been taught how to play like they have over the course of their life basically. The game is much different than it was 20yrs ago. Defenses are more aggressive, more complex. Players are bigger, quicker, faster and stronger. Everything has evolved. Again, there has to be an even medium with this "adjustment". Officials cannot expect to go from one extreme to another in the course of one season. If they do expect this, its going to be a LONG basektball season of watching teams shoot FT's and officials blowing their whistles. Nobody, I mean nobody wants to watch a game where the whistle is blown as much as it was the other nite in the OSU/OU game. It was painful!reclegend22;1535458 wrote:Yes!

But, I also do NOT want to watch basketball games that allow Louisville, Marquette, Butler, VCU (not quite as much...they are more trapping and jumping lanes), etc mug players all game knowing that refs wont blow the whistle 100 times a game. Id rather watch a foul fest than watch those teams get away with what they have the last 5 years, it isnt basketball.
So, while I think initially its painful to watch, if it forces those teams to change their ways Im all for it. I think the rest of the teams who play regular defense will adjust really, really fast. These kids are world class athletes and they have world class coaching. They can adjust (coupled with the refs toning it down as the season wears on).

To add to Laley's already great points, as pointed out earlier in this thread, the rules of the game haven't really changed -- it was always illegal to grab a player's hand in order to stop him from dribbling or shooting, just as it was to run a bumper car-styled full-court press. There is just now a clearly-defined emphasis on calling them. Officials were letting dirty play go simply because calling too many fouls was frowned upon and seen as taking the game out of the hands of the players. The NCAA has stepped in to stop that and hopefully change the culture of the game.
Regardless of one's stance on this, after watching last year's NCAA Tournament, it was painfully obvious that perimeter defense and full-court pressuring Louisville-style was getting out of hand in college basketball and transforming the sport into something entirely different. There's a big difference between playing physical and playing cheap. The way the game is going to be called going forward will certainly make it more difficult for big, burly defenders on the block to remain physical without piling up fouls. That said, it's certainly a good thing that post defenders will no longer be able to guard offensive players by shoving an arm bar into their back. After players start to get used to the new style of play, we should see some really good play in the post now that the floor will be a little more open.

"Last night's UK/Michigan State game was the second most watched non-conference basketball game ever on ESPN, behind Memphis/Tennessee in February 2008. The game averaged 4,002,000 viewers and a 2.6 HH US rating. An average of 2,977,000 people hung around to see the Kansas/Duke game afterwards."Pretty amazing.

Since the Duke-Kansas game was in the middle of the night, I'm surprised that even that many stuck around. Those are crazy numbers for the UK-Michigan State game, and not surprising that the only more watched game was also a 1 vs 2 matchup. I still remember that Tennessee-Memphis game like yesterday. That was the first and only time that the state of Tennessee will ever be the center of the college basketball universe. Can't believe it's been more than five years.

1 vs. 2 matchup and heading into the game Memphis was unbeaten, at like 30-0. I imagine the Tigers' perfect record had a major impact on the game's high ratings, since it's such a rarity that late in the year.ohiobucks1;1535921 wrote:the fuck?

Yeah, Memphis was #1, had Derrick Rose and there was some serious animosity between Calipari and Pearl. There was also major hype behind the two schools playing, which unfortunately, was a short-lived series. It was Memphis' only loss since that year other than the national title game.

Both were really good games despite the MSU one looking like a blowout early on.
