It's not about that individual, but about that individual hopefully showing others that it is okay. It's about him being a role model to those who struggle with their sexuality and are still told in many instances that homosexuality is bad (not as common as it used to be, but still there).
Agree with most of your sentiment, but Jason Collins isn't a hero and he doesn't need a cookie for proclaiming what he chooses to do in his private life.

My feelings are, "big fucking deal." I don't go around celebrating being heterosexual... I just be heterosexual, and get on with my fucking life.

Because so many people are treated like shit for being straight, smh. I agree it wouldn't be a big deal if everybody thought the same way but the fact is they don't.

Exactly, what is the "importance?"

That we now have identified 1 of the 4 homosexuals in the NBA? And now homosexual youth basketball players know they can be a professional basketball player now they have someone to look up to?

So the reason people attack Tebow so much is because he is straight?

Or the Christian part.

I'm not at Tebow fan, and I'm glad the Jets cut him if they don't think he can contribute. But if you come out as a Christian you are ridiculed by the intelligentsia (see Jon Stewart, and his ilk). If you come out as gay you get a SI issue dedicated to you.

Jason Collins is/was a lousy basketball player, and there are gay people in all facets of society. Barney Frank (politics), Martina Navratilova (sports), Tom Cruise (entertainment). There is nothing interesting about this other than some sort of strange self-congratulation.

while there certainly are gays in all professions...the interesting part comes from the fact that as a society, there is a pedestal that athletes are placed on. a certain bravado and machismo that makes this a story and to a certain extent the christian thing as well.

i think it was more the virgin thing tho with tebow, because there are other christian athletes who have gotten a pass. I dont think we want to see pro athletes as gay or christian tho in general. tebow also had plenty of supporters for a time and had the #1 jersey so clearly everyone doesnt ridicule him

I think a lot of people are religious in sports, and some outwardly so. Pretty much every post-championship interview on the floor involves thanking god.

Tebow really does take it to a different level, which (IMO) leads to the added attention. It's not every athlete that starts every press conference with "First, I'd like to thank my lord and savior Jesus Christ"

Deion Sanders? He did it all of the time after he came out as a "fornicator" and found religion with the Cowboys. Granted I'm going back a few years than some of you guys remember.

It's not important to me or probably you. And I'm not trying to say everyone in America can now feel "good" about this announcement.

But it was very courageous of him to come out, be it, the first person to come out. Lets face it, we have reached a point in time where this isn't going to cause a stir in society. He's gay, probably some organizations and religious groups will throw out some backlash, but overall this is perfectly acceptable to our society; and that is why it is important.
