Having a discussion with a Co-worker who stated the recent Alabama defense was the best college defense ever. Certaintly up there, but best ever? I have a hard time buying that. LSU few seasons ago had a pretty good defense, 02 Bucks (Homer). Who else am I'm forgetting? Who would you put in top 5?

I'd take the '92 Bama defense over last years as one of the greatest of all time. 2001 Hurricanes has to be up there.e

They did a real nice job on the 02 Hurricanes and they were supposed to be unstoppable. (just thinking about that game makes me smile.)

IMO, the 2011 'Bama defense was better than last year's, along with the others already mentioned.

2001 Hurricanes were ridiculous. So much NFL talent.

Miami scored 512 total points in 12 games for an average of 42 points per game while they only relinquished 117 for an average of 9 points per game. The Hurricane offense racked up 5,475 total yards on the season while the defense only allowed 3,239.

In recent years, the 2009 Nebraska defense was stout. Suh could cave in an entire side of an offensive line by himself and their DBs were stellar.

#1 in red zone defense.
#1 in scoring defense.
#1 in pass efficiency defense.
#2 in sacks.
#8 in rushing defense (93 yds per game)
Held 13 of 14 opponents below season average in total offense.

This was also in the pass/score happy B12 against some great offenses.

Definitely 2001 Miami and 2011 Alabama. I think 02 OSU is the best of the rest, but that top tier is pretty logjammed.

I don't think you want to use that phrase because then you would have '56 Oklahoma, '61 Alabama, early 70's Nebraska, Oklahoma & USC, etc. Of which none of the 20-30 year old on here care about.

Yeah but those teams only had to defend essentially a power running game. To be dominant in todays era of spread offenses is much more difficult. Football today is in an era where hockey and basketball was in the 80's, and baseball in the 90's where it became extremely offensive

Correct. Bama (and LSU) had great defenses in 2011. But, LSU's defense in 2003 was amazing. Held teams to 10 or less points in 8 games and only allowed over 14 points for TWO games all year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_LSU_Tigers_football_team

LOL @ the old timers here. NOTHING was better back in the old days; NOTHING. None of the players in the 50's would even make a D3 school in today's game. LOL

Since I didn't get a response from Classyposter58, I'll ask you, or anyone else who wants to respond.

After you name a year, then we can have a "current" discussion.

Last years ND defense was amazing. They had an All-America linebacker and would've won the championship had there not been controversy around him.

The better team didn't win that day.

Sadly there are some that believe that. I on the other hand realize that they got their asses kicked by a bigger stronger and more athletic team. They were completely out matched

Yeah, I don't even blame ND for losing. Alabama is just unreal these days. OSU would have beat them though; we got Urban(aka Alabama Killer).
