I was let go from a job because my boss found out I was searching for a new job. A "friend " of mine who I knew before I even worked there told on me.

Worked out well because I now have the best job I have ever had but I would never tell anyone boss you are job searching.

I applied to my current job before I left my last one, and the woman interviewing me asked for my boss's contact information for a reference. I explained to her that I would prefer that my boss not know I'm looking until after I am officially offered the job. She understood and asked for a prior employer. I obliged. Worked fine.

I don't know for certain that all hirers would accomodate like that, but I can't imagine that too many would push back with those curcumstances.

I have 3 applications out for coaching jobs -- doubt I'll hear anything. I believe I'll take the high school coaching job that was offered and then piece together other income through adjunct instructing and other side gigs. I could move to Kansas for a job, but that's really the last thing I want to do.

I know it's not much. I have that many that I am waiting to hear back from. I've already applied to 20+ jobs this season. In the last 4 years, it's over 100.

I guess, I didn't include that I do have 5-10 other apps out there in careers that I haven't been in for the last 6. I often forget about them because not much happens from those.

Great googly moogly...You should be doing at least two quality apps PER DAY. If you currently have a job, then you can be much more selective.

If you can't find enough openings to do 2 apps a day, then you should be networking or something for those unposted jobs.

I don't know your background and specific situation, but a general rule of thumb is maybe 2-3 interviews out of 100 apps with no "in" or connection. And it might take 10 interviews to land a job...so 400+ cold apps.

Out of my 100+ apps, I've had 6 interviews and 3 (may come to 4, if I accept this HS job) jobs accepted. The problem with my career is there are only certain periods where jobs open up -- November and December, then it takes a break late January through February, another short break and they have started opening up again. My career has job seasons, can't really apply at 2 jobs per day because they aren't open.

It is also HIGHLY political. It's all about who you know (and I realize it's that way with mostly every job). People want to hire who they know and who they are comfortable with. For example: I applied for a job that came open on a Friday, I found out on the following Monday or Tuesday that it was already filled. The guy who got the job has 2 less years of experience than me AND numerous licences fewer than what I have. He walked into the job because he knew the outgoing guy.

I was turned down from a job two years ago because I "wasn't qualified enough." I was more qualified than my interim superior. I didn't even make it to an on-site interview, only made it to a top-5 phone interview. No one applying for that job was more qualified than me -- guarantee.

Now, I have started applying for jobs out of my current career. I can definitely understand doing numerous applications per day with that. It's a bit overwhelming to see all these other positions available and I am not qualified for any of them. Career changes suck. Especially when you've put so much time, effort, energy, emotion, and MONEY towards what you are currently doing.

You know OSH, you could always just pray for money. After all, god is all you need! :laugh:

Look, Ohio State is a great school, but it's bread and butter is the business school, soon to be the entire engineering department(MIT will be known as the OSU of the East soon), and the medical school. If you aren't graduating with a degree in one of these, I don't care that your degree is from a B1G institution. Now you are certainly better off with a B1G degree, but you actually need to major in something valuable.
