Kids (college too) take a baseline test prior to season which somehow gives a measurement of cognitive activity. if a kid complains about being dizzy after a hit (those of us who have played lost track of that number) he is given a quick assessment by the trainer (who is at every practice/game) it is the trainer's call initially upon her assessment what's up. If there is noticeable confusion....it's a week or two post symptom. which means if a headache lasts a week then it is another week or two after that. It seems crazy to us old timers....we made out OK???? (that's questionable) haha. of course we also loaded our guts with salt pills!

They do a base line test before they start any contact, I am told its kind of like a computer game that does reaction times, pretty sure it was designed by some neurologist, and if they suspect a concussion they have them take it and they have to hit a certain range to be able to play. From experiencemy son has had two concussions one bad one and one not so bad, and it did get him back earlier on the not so bad one. I think it also takes some of the guess work out of diagnosis.

Thought I read that there's a rule change this year where the head ref can remove a kid from the game (maybe after a big hit or some other noticeable play) if the kid is showing signs of a potential concussion. He could only re-enter after being cleared by the team doc/trainer.

Imagine a team is on a 4th quarter drive to win the game & the feature RB or QB'S takes a big hit & gets removed by the ref.

Could cause some issues.

Here it is...officials CAN remove a player for exhibiting signs of a concussion.

If a player is removed, he cannot return to competition that same day.

Okay, I am showing my age probably but if it was me taking that test prior to any concussion I would slow myself down in order to fudge the test. I would hate to have to sit out a week for a ding and I would hide it if I could. I know that goes against the new movement, but if I had to sit out over a simulated computer game and I feel fine I would be pissed.

You'd probably be too slow & then end up in remedial classes. LOL.

Thats why when you come off the field just avoid any trainer or doctor all-together. I am all for protecting the kids but sometimes you just play through it. A headache?? My damn eyes better be bleeding or falling out of my head before I make any attempt to talk to a doc/trainer. Stay in the game, take a deep breath, gather your thoughts, get your bearings right, and PLAY ON!

To answer your question, my son was involved in a collision Saturday. Was a little woozy. He was held out as a precaution yesterday and today. Will take a baseline tomorrow.

I am certain this would not have been the case "back in the day" but I don't know what else can be expected. You can't ask medical professionals to ignore symptoms of a head injury. A coach would be a fool to override the advice of a person with medical training in this day and age.

Things are a lot different today than years past. I remember as a freshman in basketball practice I weighed about 140 pounds and was 6'2 and collided with Rod Rehm. The first thing that hit the floor was my head. I don't know how long I was unconscious, but I was definitely out cold. I got a drink, finished practice and walked home. Never saw a doctor, not even sure I mentioned it to my parents. The strangers whose house I walked into that night were very understanding.

While I'm not trying to inflame or take sides in an argument, attending the games is absolutely support. Between admission and concessions I easily drop $200 a year at the stadium so my family and I can enjoy and support the team.

Looking forward to seeing the team this season. We're gonna get a W on the turf early and throw a few upsets on people late. Go Riders!

I am of the same persuasion. Probably hard to fudge the test if they're looking for microexpressions to indicate reflex, but one would still try.

As for concussions, are there not physiological signs? Dilated pupils and such? Why not use THAT as the litmus test of whether or not a player should be removed?

Heard from a pretty good source that we will be playing Cleveland Marshall for our first game, should be a lot better competition and more points, Red Rider 1 have you heard this too?

Red Rider are sure it wasn't hitting Rod Rehm that caused your concussion and not the floor,that guy was a rock in high school.

I've heard that Lincoln West wasn't wanting to play us & back in June & tried to back out of the contract. We wouldn't let them unless we had a replacement.

Over the weekend I was told that Lincoln West only had 20 kids out for football and through communication with them it seems like we're of the opinion that we'd rather not play a D-1 team with 20 kids.

John Marshall was suggested as a replacement. It would be a better game. They've played teams close in recent years but its a team we should beat and then it's likely they win 3-5 games which would help us with 2nd level computer points.

I don't know if its official, but if you're hearing it, coupled with the conversation I had over the weekend with our coach & AD, sounds like it might be a done deal.

City wide booster club fundraising drive is tonight. Perfect opportunity for all residents to show their support for our athletic teams.

Amazing how Wizard and Series show up the same day after being gone for months at a time. I am guessing that Series just got his internet turned back on or something...I am kidding Series before you get your panties all in a bunch! There is many ways to support the team, however bashing the coach for unjust things would not be one of them.

Amen! I would stay as far from a trainer or doctor as possible. If they would ask me what was wrong I would say my shoulder. Now kids seem to come out and go to the trainer for everything.

Some ways of support have bigger impacts than others. Money for tickets & concessions spent at away games doesn't come back to us unless we sell presale tickets. Can't remember the last non playoff game I bought a presale ticket for.

Tickets and concessions for home games have costs associated with them....so $ spent on those items isn't pure profit....and neither support the booster club.

Concessions support the band boosters and while they deserve support, the food they sell has a cost...so what's leftover after bills are paid is what goes to them.

Same with ticket sales...I thought I heard our AD say that we need to gross $10,000 per home game in ticket sales to "break even." Football is a cash cow for the athletic department so I'm sure that break even number means football needs to make a certain amount to support all other sports.

So if $10k in ticket sales is needed each home game, we need 1800 adult tickets sold at $6 each to break 10k.

There were some pretty paltry attendances last year at home games...outside of a sellout for the Triway game, it was downright pathetic.

Say the Triway game drew 3000 (estimate) & the other 4 home games were 2000 (estimate). That's 11000 total attendance for 5 home games at $6 per ticket. $66000 in ticket sales with $50000 needed to "break even." So $16000 in pure profit divided by 11000 total attendance. Every ticket you bought resulted in a pure profit of $1.46 to the athletic department.

None of those figures take into account student tickets sold, I counted every person attending as an adult ticket.

So someone attending all 5 home games would be contributing $7.30 to the athletic department's bottom line. Of course buying a program & some 50/50 tickets would help the cause a lot more.

Straight up donations have the biggest impact, 50/50 tickets, Spirit club raffle tickets & the car raffle are nice too. Serpentini donates the car, so it's all pure profit for the Booster Club.

Again YOUR version of whatever the hell it is you are talking about! Someone in Orrville has a lot of time on their hands! In the meantime I will continue to support Orrville athletics by attending the football games and catching another sport's game here and there.

Do all the math you wish, it changes nothing. Attending the games is supporting the team. Even if it's only a $1.46 per adult ticket, it's support.

I could easily feed my family at the Barn or Dravenstotts before games, I choose the concession stand for Friday nights. Whatever profit the program gets from my $25-$35 expenditure on a typical home friday concession stand visit, it's still support.


I have no desire to be drawn into the personal vendettas that exist on this forum. I do feel strongly enough to speak out on a few issues though, the dummy in the square needed to go (Sorry rrfan)

and attending games and patronizing the concession stand is support (Sorry Red Rider 1)

If you don't believe me, stand at the gate and take a poll of everyone who pays to come in. Belittling the support of the paying fans is folly.



Looking toward the season, I think the OCC might be a little more open than some of us seem to think. The Riders are actually going to sneak up on some people this year. It's not often that can be said. Hearing the talk around Wooster and Mansfield, they already have credited themselves with victories over Orrville. I see some upsets coming.

No problem disagreeing. At least we can do so respectfully. Sorry though..."supporting" the team by saying you buy a ticket then trashing the coach is not a whole lot of support.

That's merely choosing to spend entertainment dollars....not supporting much of anything.

But yes, support is support no matter how small.

And I agree with you about us sneaking up on teams. So important that we get off to a good start and stay healthy.

I think Luke Smith at QB will be a pleasant surprise. He's a gamer and we need that at QB. There are some young kids that will have an impact this year too. As Davault has always said...if you can play, you can play...senior or freshman.

Talk is the same in Triway, Millersburg, Apple Creek, Creston...and probably in Orrville too.

Like hearing the kids are motivated to make last year a distant memory. I think we're got a good mix of kids all in it for the same goal....to get Orrville football back to where it belongs...the playoffs.

And it is now official.....Cleveland John Marshall will now be our week 1 opponent....replacing Cleveland Lincoln West.
