The crazy would just wait for recess, or school letting out when they are going to buses and what not.

There are things that can be done, but more or less just placebos to make people feel safer, which sometimes is underrated.

Better diagnoses and treatment of mentally ill people would be a good start. Most of the notable mass killers of the past couple decades(Klebold, Harris, Cho, Holmes, and it seems Lanza) gave ample warning signs and in most cases were even flagged by a psychiatrist, but were simply ignored.

Actually, maybe the best solution is pretty simple and relatively inexpensive: reinforce doors (replace the glass with a peephole) and lock - only teacher and a few admin people would have keys. Basically it makes every classroom a panic room.

It will work great until some teacher goes all Jonestown.

This is a very good point. I think some of the best words in the past few weeks actually came from Brady Quinn
I know when it happened, I was sitting and, in my head, thinking what I could have done differently. When you ask someone how they are doing, do you really mean it? When you answer someone back how you are doing, are you really telling the truth?

Uh, we live in a society of social networks, with Twitter pages and Facebook, and that’s fine and stuff, but we have contacts with our work associates, our family, our friends, and it seems like half the time we are more preoccupied with our phone and other things going on instead of the actual relationships that we have right in front of us. And hopefully, people can learn from this and try to actually figure out if someone is battling something deeper on the inside than what they are revealing on a day-to-day basis.

This country has a long way to go on that. Between the uninsured that have no real access to on-going medical care, and those who do have insurance that plans cover very little mental health related, it is kind of tough.

Unlike a broken leg, or an infection, mental illness is an on-going thing that needs consistent treatment. It doesn't just heal itself up and you move on.

To be treated effectively it requires access to often expensive drugs, as well as consistent appointments with psychiatrists/psychologists that aren't cheap.

To properly treat many mental illnesses with a positive outcome the resources people have access to (be it medicaid or personal insurance) are often insufficient.

That in and of itself is a totally different conversation, but until mental illness treatment is put on par with any other illness and not considered something "different" we aren't ever going to get our arms wrapped around the problem of it.

My town didn't even pass the levy for police, so we had a county sheriff that patrolled once every two weeks.

I can name AT LEAST a dozen school districts in Trumbull County alone that don't have security guards.

I wouldn't carry. IMO 100 zillion times more likely to go off than what happened and me stopping it.

gosh a ruddies, you are condemned by your own words.
Pick6 wrote:Nor did I say they were, that is just my interpretation due to the fact of teachers going on strike for levy's not passing, when there are more important levy's that could be getting passed. Citizens would be more likely to vote to increase the safety of their children than the salary of the teachers.

Black people tend to commit murder for a reason: monetary gain, retaliation, etc. White people tend to be weirdos who snap and start killing randomly or to fulfill some sexual fetish. Look at the % of known serial killers that are white.

"Gunman shot self as 1st responders arrived."

Maybe security officers in schools would/do make a difference. Seems authorities saved lives in this case. Appears he wanted no part of any gun fight, the bastard just wanted to kill as many unarmed people as possible.

I'm guessing there are more murders in the inner city, though fewer instances of being tied up in a basement and having your dead corpse fucked while wearing his mother's skin.

I think that's a stretch, considering he was clearly prepared to die and wore body armor - I'd say he was prepared to, and possibly anticipated, taking on a single guard. More likely he was getting low on ammo or simply didn't want to risk any chance of being taken alive at that point.

anyone remember Charles Whitman? You completely lock down schools and some crazy will just wait until the children and adults exit going home. You push the fences and gates back further and further, a gunman will just wait. You always have to leave the safety of the perimeter eventually.

That's what I would think also....more murders resulting from the scenario your described above. Dead is dead.

Arming an admin at our school wouldn't guarantee anything. There are full glass doors that lead directly into classrooms, and hallways. Your admin might be at the other end of the school. This is not a solution.

This is an article from today...
"What we know is he shot his way into the building. He was not buzzed in," Malloy told ABC's "This Week." "He penetrated the building by literally shooting an entrance into the building."
