As for the armored cars, I've had trouble busting those open, too. If you can get there quick enough, you can kill the guard before he takes the money to the truck. The most I've ever stole was like 5K, though.

yeah that definitely isn't true. The stars activate pretty much as soon as you cross into the airspace. Must be the planes at Trevor's air field then. Even at Los Santos International Airport that doesn't work. I tried landing my plan and was getting rammed by police cars seconds later.
I almost stole the C-130 by parachuting in, but it is so slow to taxi I was killed before taking off.
