I totally agree. School should be dismissed at noon. And there should also be school transportation provided for students unable to get there and also for those kids whos parents do not want their child driving or riding as a passenger with another student down to Columbus.

OGT testing, can't change the date. I think the supt. puts in plenty of OT and this is part of his job. Anyone can go if they want. Teachers and students- just need a sub or an excuse. There are other people (not on this forum ) that would complain because they have to get a sitter and it disrupts their schedule. Also the people that say sports are treated better and that we should have school no matter what. If we took this day off, we'd have to add another school day on the end and graduation couldn't be on the date planned, ETC., ETC. The graduation thing is what sealed doing it this way along with OGT testing.

All of that could very well be true. That said, everyone knows that if it was the boy's basketball team playing in Columbus on Thursday that everyone would be off. The state has makeup dates for the OGT test all of next week. They could make up a day during spring break if it was that big of a deal. They can hold graduation whenever they want to. Those reasons are simply political propaganda out of the administration's office. I am a much bigger fan of the Red Rider boys' teams than I am of the girls, but this is about as hypocritical as a school district can be regarding equality. Hopefully, the cold shoulder further motivates the girls to bring home the gold medal.

Students getting a note to go is not the problem. The problem is that they basically said a teacher can go if they find their own sub! That is a Joke! They did not have to take the whole day off. I said early dismisal at 12:00 simple solution.

OGT testing has make up dates if needed. Richie has no leg to stand on except to be bull headed. He will be down there and the teachers should be able to go too.

I didn't mean you can't fault him for the decision he made, I meant you can't fault him for the perks that come with his position. And if he goes to the game...well...how many of us get the same benefits as the employer?!

And really, all the teachers and students don't come to the games when they're at home.

Sorry Series I did misunderstand what you meant.

I do understand not all the teachers and students will be there, however the ones that want to should be able to. Going to watch a girls basketball game should not be considered a benefit of a job. Sports are a part of many peoples entertainment and this team deserves to be supported by all the people who want to and that includes Teachers and Students!

OGT testing doesn't work that way either, its for people that are sick etc.. But that's not the problem because they do testing in the morning. So the complaint is teachers can't go. How many people would that be, do you think 20? 30? I wouldn't know how hard it is to get a sub, but I'm thinking most will be able to find one off the sub list. I can't remember taking the whole day off ever. If we did it wasn't during OGT testing or it was when there wasn't an OGT testing week. I think there's been some early dismissals. It all depends on the game times and doesn't have to do with Boy's or Girl's. If the game was at 11:00 and no OGT testing, I'm sure we would have taken off no matter Boy's or Girl"s. He just did what seemed to make the most sense with disrupting the fewest schedules. If you're mad the teachers can't go, then you should vote for the levy. Voting no would just punish the teachers more (salaries are 86% of the costs). Making these decisions isn't easy and many factors have to be taken into account and each decision is different. After each one you're going to be second guessed by everyone who doesn't know the facts and reasons as to why the decision was made. In my opinion it wasn't because: 1. He wants the levy to fail 2. He doesn't like girls as well as boys 3. He hates the teachers. It was because this was the best decision that disrupted the least amount of people.

Flash- go back and read my posts. I never said cancell the whole day. I said dismiss at 12:00 so all can have the opportunity to enjoy this game. There will not be enough subs and the school is not helping to find them. It is on the teachers to do this which they never do, so I would think it would be difficult.

Your arguement is that he did what made the most sense? Please tell me how you came to that conclusion.

Also don't tell me how to vote on a Levy. I have never voted against one in my life even though my taxes are insanely high.

I believe you can, as if you're under the limit you'll still meet the instruction hours needed in a year. I don't think they really care as to why if you stay under the 5.

I'm almost positive we burnt one in Salem in 2004 for a girls semifinal on Friday evening.

rrfan, I didn't tell you how to vote, I used "you" as a generalization for whomever would be mad about this. My point was, the people that may not go are teachers. So they'd be the ones to vote no on the levy? Doesn't make sense. I don't think this has anything to do with the levy. Like most people that have jobs, on occassion you have to go to your job when you want to do something else. This is one of those occassions, but there is an out if you want to do it.

Going to watch the girls play basketball may well be part of his job as a representative of the school as well as to support the students of the school. You can best believe he won't have to spend the $8...that too is a perk!!! LOL!

Why he did or didn't cancel class...you have friends in the know...ask them.

Really, nothing to be upset about is it!

Yes it is. Show some support for the team that has had a great season, and to thank them the super slaps them all in the face. Good leadership!

DIII Girls Semifinal, Final Score:

Anna 80
Orrville 59

Congrats to Orrville on the great season. Plybon finished with 28 points, 11 rebounds. She ends her career over 2,100 points, good enough for 30th all time in Ohio history. Not too shabby!

Talked to the superintendent today about the decision to go a partial day. There was a request by a teachers union official to not cancel school. If school was cancelled it would have to be made up on Spring break and a number of teachers had made vacation plans and didn't want to do that. If it was added on at the end of the year it would move back graduation and teachers would have to work into June, if they had to work into June, 4-6 teachers are retiring and working 1 day in June would mean they wouldn't get their first retirement checks until the next month an lose thousands of dollars because they worked 1 day in June. The last time we took time off for a State tournament game numerous parents and concerned citizens (15 or more) called up and said it was a hardship to change schedules on short notice and we should be going to school and not taking time off for any athletics. The teachers had two options- get a sub or take a personal day, so they didn't even have to get someone to work for them, just call up an say they weren't coming in. Since the buses were being used for students, the school athletic department arranged for a bus to charter any students who wanted to go to the game. A number of anonymous donors paid for any students that couldn't afford to pay their way. I hope that answers most of the concerns on how the decision was made. Like most decisions there are many factors that most of us don't know about and assumptions why actions were taken are not always what they seem.

Too bad John Ritchie and the teachers union didn't tell Mark Alberts to run a 2-3 zone and stop pressing!!

I thought the exact same thing mid-way through the first quarter.
