First Trip to South Bend

Okay, so it's not my first trip to South Bend, but I am going to my first ever ND home game this Saturday. My sister went to school near there, so I have been to South Bend a lot and I know ND's campus pretty well. I'm staying with friends in the area, already have tickets and a parking pass for a lot near Ivy Court. I also won't be getting into town until around 11pm or midnight on Friday, so the pep rally and drum circle are out.

From those of you who have been to games there, what do I need to know? What should I look for, what traditions should I partake in, what can't I miss while I'm there? Any advise, tips, and info would be appreciated.

Gameday.nd.edu will have a schedule of events. Player walk starts at 1:30 I think, anywhere from the library, touchdown Jesus, to the stadium you'll see people lining up if you're interested in that. After that there is a band concert on the steps of Bond Hall. The band will play all the songs from the halftime show along with Victory March, Damsha Bua, and other songs. Something I've never done is trumpets under the dome in the Main building, Golden Dome, where there is a short concert inside the building. There is an atrium with three levels that people fill along with the band.

Other than that check out the grotto and walk through the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, unless you have already done that.

I must admit, when my ex gf was going to school there. Nd is a badass place to see. It's perfectly green, no trash anywhere, lake is pretty.
Areas around campus are sketchy, but the campus is pretty incredible.

Also, are you tailgating somewhere? The main tailgating lot is right outside the stadium. It'll be packed but if you walk through there, you'll find people that will give you food and beer. I'm actually going with a group of 7 friends from college but will be tailgating out in White Field which is just an open field of general admission parking. One of the guys went to OSU and lived on my floor in Lincoln before going on his mission and then transferring to BYU. He's driving up from Auburn and is pretty excited to finally get to a game in South Bend.

That can be said about most moderately large private schools.

Thanks so much for the info. The guy who got me the tickets also got me a parking pass next to Ivy Court (the little hotel next to campus). He asked them, and said that there's a grassy area behind the lot, so if I park in one of those spots then I should be able to tailgate on the lawn, so that's the plan. I don't know if it's an official campus lot or if it's a private lot.

We parked in some neighborhood off of campus. It was maybe a 10 minute walk from there. Can't remember where it was. Sorry.

Try visiting The Ohio State University. Nothing like a clean spring day on the Oval.

And then you walk north of the Oval and see the sea of tired old engineering buildings and north campus clusterfuck dorms. Gee is doing an amazing job turning it around though. In ten years the campus will be pretty awesome I think.

Still, it is just a different thing than Notre Dame's campus. Two totally different styles and meanings.

I looked up where that hotel is and its southeast of campus next to the baseball field. It shouldn't be that long of a walk to the stadium and you'll walk right through or next to the main tailgating lot. The grotto and Dome are at the far northwest part of campus so that will be a little bit of a walk. If you're feeling like really stretching your legs, we'll be in the lot northwest of campus and the lakes and I'll have a brat and some beer waiting for you. There is also a free shuttle that runs from next to the library to the tailgating lot if you don't feel like walking.

And then you keep walking a bit further north and see one of the most prestigious business colleges in the country; and some of the most advanced chemical and physics buildings on the planet. Let me know when you are done crying as Ohio State continues to be on the cutting edge despite massive funding cuts.

Well further north of the north campus dorms would put you in Clintonville...not sure where you went to school.

The chemical building right now is a gigantic hole in the ground. There's not much to see right now... When the CBEC is done, it'll look pretty awesome.

Actually I'd say the most prestigious is in Philadelphia. ND probably isn't even in the top 15 when it comes to business schools.

But ND does have a great campus and I've enjoyed the 3 times I have been there.

I was referring to Scott Laboratory and the Physics research building; two premier academic buildings in the country.

This would probably be best answered by someone who actually attends/attended Notre Dame. Unfortunately, most of the ND fans on here are OSU students who root for a school they've maybe been to a handful of times. Probably best to ask on another forum.
