New SI story came out today. Maybe some improper benefits for LSU players at clubs. TM7 isnt currently on the team, but could hurt him about his return. Other players named for other stuff. Page 2 has possible rule violations story.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/magazine/10/16/honey-badger/index.html?eref=sihp&sct=hp_t11_a0
Possible NCAA Violations: Since last January Mathieu has allowed his image to be used on a flyer promoting an event at a local nightclub, appeared in several online videos promoting other events and, multiple sources told SI, received benefits at the club that could affect his eligibility. NCAA rule 12.5.2.1 says that anyone who “accepts any remuneration or permits the use of his or her name or picture to advertise, recommend or promote directly the sale or use of a commercial product or service of any kind” is ineligible.

Evans and Thamel report:
- Several of the videos promote events at a Baton Rouge Club called The Palace.

- One in particular encourages viewers to attend an Era Nation party at the club on March 10, 2012. Mathieu appears in the video, and an event promoter says “the whole LSU football team” will be there.

- A flyer for the party has two photographs of Mathieu in his LSU jersey and describes the event as an Era Nation Album Release Party for Tyrann Mathieu (It also features photographs of former LSU standout Mo Clairborne and current LSU sophomore Anthony Johnson who are listed as party hosts). Note: When asked about it, Johnson denied any involvement; Clairborne says he was aware of the party but did not attend.

- In another video Mathieu is onstage at The Palace talking on a mic about the club’s chicken wings and fries. A source closely affiliated with the club told SI that Mathieu received access to the club’s VIP area: “Every time he came, we let all the football players, like his teammates, in for free.”

- Mathieu is also featured on a flyer for a January 14, 2012 party at Club H20 in New Orleans.

Several people discussed the athlete’s drug use:
- Said Mathieu’s father Darrin Hayes, who is serving a life sentence in prison for murder, in a letter to SI: “Tyrann has a drug problem. I expected more out of him because he know how I lost everything behind drugs.”

The Era Nation Crew: Late in high school Mathieu and his friends formed a group they called Era Nation comprised of self-described athletes, rappers and songwriters. Mathieu stayed close to the crew from high school to LSU, even as he became a national star. Over the last year Mathieu has appeared in multiple videos online that show he and the Era Nation crew at clubs, partying.

With regards to the "benefits," repeat after me... "It happens everywhere."

Anyone that thinks that "their" college is clean is kidding themselves... except maybe the schools that are really really really bad or sports aren't a "big deal" such as the Ivy League where athletic scholarships aren't even allowed (but I wouldn't be shocked if there were impermissible benefits there from time to time.)

I agree. Clowney and Trent Richardson just did the same thing and nothing came out of it. Doesnt make it right though. Did the LSU players do it on purpose (if advertising), did they get special privileges? Who knows. Im just glad that TM isnt apart of the team "this" year so maybe nothing bad will come out of it. Some schools get busted, some dont.

I still don't understand why Mathieu didn't transfer and play the season.

Some people are doomed due to their childhood an upbringing. That's the saddest part of the story to me.

Doesn't matter if Mathieu isn't on the team right now, it happened while he was on the team, and LSU could be punished for it, though I highly doubt anything comes from it.

Your right. I was thinking since it happened after title game (off season), and since he didnt play since then. But, yes......you are right. He was on the team until AUG

Deserved to be suspended without a doubt. If he gets his act/life together, I think LSU should allow him back. If he is still doing what the SI story was about, I wouldnt want him back at all. Causes problems with team and NCAA, and can cause the teams focus/chemistry/outlook problems. LSU doesnt need a headache. Its sad when a guy follows the footsteps of family members who have problems. With the blessing of a scholly and having the talent he has.......he shouldnt mess it up or take it for granted. Its alot of money to lose, NFL wise. He took the right steps by going to rehab, staying at LSU, still working out at the LSU rec, etc. I dont want him to be a Pryor (and thats not a diss to anyone). Im sure you know what I mean.

If he was eligible he would have done what pryor did (supplemental draft). I don't think its a diss, but we need to be realistic here.

Ok, now that you've answered that has your opinion on honey badgers changed? How did Mr. Mathieu's decisions effect the public's outlook on honey badgers in general? If you were in Mr. Mathieu's shoes how would you try to rebuild the bridges burned(no pun intended) between yourself and the honey badger population?

Doesn't make anything in the article less damning. Just question their methods. OSU fans will have little sympathy considering last summer.
