Gottfried is obviously a master evaluator of talent, and evidently a tremendous recruiter who relates well with players. That's why I think he'll make a great NBA assistant/scout one day.

He did a very good job of getting the Wolfpack back into the national spotlight with a trip to the Sweet 16 last year, but Herb Sendeck did that, too, and eventually, in the eyes of the wildly unreasonble State fan-base, it won't be enough. This is the same fan-base that believed the school should make a push for Phil Jackson after he left the Lakers in 2011. Delusional is a compliment.

Latest AP poll:

1. Duke (39 first place votes)
2 Michigan (11)
3. Kansas & Syracuse (tie)
5. Louisville
6. Arizona
7. Indiana
8. Florida
9. Butler
10. Gonzaga

Butler cracks the Top Ten for the first time under Brad Stevens. It will not be the last, either. I do expect the Bulldogs to lose this week to Temple, however. The Owls have a lot of weapons and have played a brutal schedule. They'll be ready.

MLK Day specials today?

Cincinnati +8.5 at Syracuse
Oklahoma State +4.5 at Baylor

I'm thinking both dogs, especially after Cuse's big win at the Yum Center. I think OSU is just better than Baylor, even in Waco.

I agree man. I'd take OSU to win straight up.

I'm hoping that there's no letdown for the 'Cuse today.

I'm very interested to see what the line will be for Temple-Butler on Wednesday. There will be at least one big let down this week after all of the big wins over the weekend; there almost always is. I think Syracuse will handle its business in a closely-contested game at the Carrier Dome tonight.

So that leaves Butler falling short. As good as the Bulldogs are, history tells us that they typically slip up in two or three conference games. Although that is usually against teams more familiar with them from the Horizon. Temple is good enough to put money down, though, I think.

I think a big key to the Cincy-Syracuse game tonight is whether or not Cashmere Wright is playing. I haven't heard one way or the other, although I certainly could have missed it. I'm not sure how well the Bearcats will play on the road without him.

Butler has to go to LaSalle first on Wednesday. Would not be surprised at all if Butler goes 0-2 for the week.

Huge week for Wisconsin to make or break it in the B1G. They host Michigan State and Minnesota. If they lose both (not sure they have ever lost twice in a week at the Kohl Center), their schedule is brutal the rest of the way.

at OSU
at ILL
vs MICH
at MINN
vs OSU
at NW
at MSU

Unlike Illinois, Wisconsin doesn't have the OOC resume to boost themselves come bubble time. I predict that one of these 2 teams ends up being a possible NCAA Tournament victim. Likely Illinois, given that regardless of OOC, I don't see how a 8-10 or 7-11 team in conference gets an at-large bid.

Frank Haith facing serious trouble.

Rec and others, I know you have been critical of Haith since he was at UM. Now at MU, he's faced some tough times recently, starting with the round 1 upset last year.

Don't be surprised if Duke loses on Wednesday in its first game after returning to No. 1. Like the Leon County Civic Center in Tallahassee, the 8,000 seat arena on Miami's campus in Coral Gables has been a house of horrors for Duke over the years. The Blue Devils lost there as the No. 5 team in the nation in 2008 and also trailed there by 14 points in 2010 during the national title season, barely escaping in the final minute.

Despite Reggie Johnson being out, the Canes are a very good squad. Shane Larkin and Durand Scott compose one of the more dangerous backcourts in the league. And I am not sure with Kelly out that Duke has anybody who can matchup with 6-11 Kenny Kadji, a serious perimeter threat. Miami is No. 20 in Pomeroy and No. 5 in RPI, with a top five SOS and 14-3 overall record. This is a scary team.

Speaking of Miami, not surprised at all that Frank Haith is in hot water. The reasons why he fled Miami are making more and more sense. Let's be serious.

I hope he and Missouri get hit hard because Missouri needs to come face to face with how pitiful a hire they really made. I mean, really, Missouri? You take a guy who at Miami was 26 games below .500 in the ACC and only coached in ONE NCAA Tournament in seven years? As soon as the holdovers from Mike Anderson are gone, Frank Haith will return back to normal.

'Cuse rallies to beat Cincy. Awesome. Not a pretty game but I enjoyed it all the same.

And the given rule is that as soon as a team gets to where they're looking like they might possibly be a step above the rest, they fall and fall quickly.

Good call. Cincy did have Wright back from injury, but he didn't particularly help the Bearcats' cause in the shooting category, going 2 of 13. I imagine his ball handling made him a valued presence on the road in the Carrier, though.

To say I am biased is to clearly underemphasize the situation, but without Kelly going down to injury, Duke is more than likely still unbeaten and a clear favorite in Coral Gables on Wednesday. With Kelly out, and considering how good of a team Miami is -- the Canes are one of the 25 best in the country with Reggie Johnson in the lineup -- the game is a toss up.

I agree, though, that Duke is not a step above the rest without Kelly. They're not even a top ten team without him. Probably top 15 or 20.

Watching this Georgetown/ND game..showed JT3 in an interview and he said he got his team together and talked about what MLK meant and how it's on the same day as Obama's inauguration. I wonder how awkward the white dude felt during that.

Speaking of Notre Dame at home, where was Manti Te'o on tonight's broadcast? During the ND/UK game, they showed him at least a dozen times...

NC State down 1 to awful Wake Forest with under 7 to play.
Missouri down 1 at home to South Carolina with under 7 to play.
Louisville and Nova tied late in the first half.

Top 25 teams not having it easy tonight.

Missouri without Michael Dixon, Keion Bell, Laurence Bowers and Earnest Ross. Frank Haith in jeopardy, but having 4 of your 6 top scorers out makes it pretty tough.

Villanova tops Louisville. Maybe it's time Peyton Siva stops with the practical jokes and starts playing ball. Do not care for Siva and his childlike personality. The way he jumped in front of the camera during the Battle 4 Atlantis while Rick Pitino was being interviewed and started making goofy faces was very weird. Definitely a developmental problem going on there.

It feels good saying that. I've had that on my mind for awhile.
