I guess what I don't understand, is that he justifies dumping Michigan because of the balance sheet. But then why not dump Purdue, or even MSU, if it's about money?

I think the other schools, USC, Navy, etc, are no brainers for ND to keep, for reason already discussed.

I would disagree with some of that article because I don't think the balance sheet means much here. I think with the move to the ACC, Swarbrick wants to try to keep as much tradition as possible. If he's only able to fit in two B1G games, he's going to take the ones with the most history. Those are Purdue and Michigan State.

I would have rather seen it be Michigan and Michigan State, but then you are cutting out your in-state rivalry, and one of the longest standing games you have. So it comes down to which Michigan school to drop. Michigan State just has more history with ND.

Those 2 schools only have more history with ND if you base it solely on number of games played. Consider:

- ND/Mich go back to 1887
- Michigan taught ND "how to play" football when ND was starting back then
- ND's first season was 3 games against Michigan
- ND modeled its stadium after Michigan Stadium

Seems like some good history to me.

Perhaps ND doesn't like the history of Fielding Yost being an anti-Semitic, anti-catholic, and sore loser

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying ND doesn't have history with Michigan. And they have some incredible memories, too (I still love watching Rocket's two returns and the "Unconscious Touchdown" on YouTube). I'm just saying that Purdue is an in-state rival that ND has played every year...uninterrupted...since 1946. And Michigan State also has a ton of history. ND began playing Purdue in 1896, and Michigan State in 1897.

Also, ND and Michigan have taken 30+ year breaks twice, in addition to the occasional breaks throughout the years. Purdue and Michigan State have never seen those types of breaks in scheduling.

It's almost more of a tribute to the history of the rivalry to take an extended break with Michigan. LOL.

That is a good point, Sherm and I had not looked it at from that angle. Though I'm still not happy about it.....it will make the next time they play (after these next two) extra special.

I'm sure ND AD Soreprick figured they already have a strong Midwest recruiting base and one of the B1Gs had to go. The longevity of the MSU & Pur series are kinda lost on me as warranting a true reason but if Soreprick had to pick one he had a built in excuse to get rid of the most competitive (last 40 yrs) of the three to try and guarantee ND more victories.

You don't understand why the longevity of the MSU and Purdue series plays a factor into the scheduling decisions of a University who prides itself on tradition? I mean, we are talking about the same University who refuses to join a conference citing a tradition of Independence. Bottom line is tradition means everything to ND and the rich ND alumni that throw millions at the football program.

And if you honestly think that ND is opting out of the Michigan series because it's the hardest of the three B1G schools they face and they would rather replace it by a cupcake...you are going to look pretty foolish when that spot is filled with a marquee matchup with a school from the Big 12 or SEC.

You act like notre dame is filling that spot with a 1-aa team or a Mac team. At least all 12 of our games are from teams from a bcs conference or an independent. Find me 1 other team in the nation that does that?

Well "m' boy," looks like you have it all figured out. Except you forgot that ND won't be making the move to the ACC until the 2015 season. And they will play Michigan in 2014. And in 2015 and 2016, ND already has four ACC opponents scheduled. So they could, theoretically, drop Michigan for a marquee matchup with FSU during those years. The schedules past 2016 are far from set.

So let me amend my statement. ND could fill Michigan's spot with a marquee matchup with a school from the Big 12 or SEC after the 2016 season​.

Texas is going to be on two future schedules i think 2014 and 2015. I wouldn't be shocked to see Wisconsin in the near future either.

I don't think it will happen, but a 2 year Ohio State-Notre Dame series would be incredible. I was too young for the 90s matchups but I'm sure they were hyped.

They tried to get it scheduled a year or so ago and had a deal in place but it fell through because they couldn't get the schedule worked out. Both said they would like to get it scheduled in the future.

I love the rivalry, but I'm all for taking a break. Let Notre Dame see how the ACC thing works and let Michigan have some schedule flexibility. Nothing wrong with that.

After dumping Michigan for a long term basis, I don't think they'd do it now. It'd be a slap in the face to cancel Michigan for 3 years and replace them with another B1G team. If they scheduled it in 2018/2019 during the scheduled break, it wouldn't be an issue. However, if they schedule Wisconsin(or any other B1G team for that matter) from 2015-2017, it wouldn't be forgotten.

I'm not saying that they do. I'm just saying that outside of Michigan State/Purdue, don't expect to see another B1G team on Notre Dame's schedule from 2015-2017. IMO it would look bad, disrespectful...(w/e you want to call it) to dump Michigan and replace them with another B1G school; especially a top tier one like Wisconsin. Doesn't it kind of defeat the purpose of dumping Michigan in the first place? Like I said before, scheduling a B1G team during the schedule break isn't a big deal. But, doing it in that 3 year span would be a stab in the back.

Notre Dame needs Michigan just as Michigan needs Notre Dame. So if you think ND doesn't need them, then Michigan doesn't need Notre Dame either.

They can both schedule a Home-and-Home with pretty much anyone.
They are both national brands.

And if you think Notre Dame doesn't need Michigan, think about this...

In 2007, when both teams were undefeated, their game still was getting national attention. Besides the '05 USC game, with the famous "Reggie Push," the USC-ND game has been nationally irrelevant. The only time anyone outside of the 2 schools cares about that game is when they're both good, which hasn't happened all that much recently.

You incorrectly think that everyone thinks of/puts Notre Dame on a pedestal.
