Going to try to tomorrow. My buddy is out now and he said its been quiet but the squirrels are active, which leads him to believe we are going to have a tough winter.Enforcer;1282921 wrote:Anyone get out on opening morning today?

Went out saw the same little buck I have been seeing on my camera. He just hung around for about half an hour then some does came out. I kept hearing something back in the thicket but it never came out. I am hoping its a big one running with the does.

Missed a nice 12 pointer today. Was in my stand he came out of some standing corn. I grunted a few times but he wouldnt come my way. The wind was not in my favor. He just stayed about 40-50 yards out and would not come closer. I ended up taking a shot even though I knew better. My shot was over his shoulder bout 4inches or so. I am still pissed that I even took the shot. I took my 45 yard pin off my bow cause I bought some new truglo pro sights. My friend I got em off of only had two so I sighted them in at 25 and 35 figure I could estimate the rest til my other pins come in.

There is a giant 10 point that feeds in my Neighbor's backyard every morning. I want to set up on the roof of my shed and take him out

Went out yesterday morning. 6 point came walking up behind me, drew on him and my strings made a creeking noise and he saw me. He stayed partially behind a tree about 25 yards away, could still get a shot off though. I shot and hit the tree by an inch. Doubly upset...missed my first ever buck, and destroyed my broadhead.

Been seeing a lot of does and small bucks. Saw the 12 a few times but got a glimpse of a monster and been waiting on him. If I dont get a chance with him I will be able to get that 12 he is a nice one and been coming around quite a bit.

Does anyone else hunt public land only? With myself just starting out, I don't have any connections yet to get on private land. I feel like there has to be a different mentality when hunting public land, kind of a "take what you can get" approach vs. waiting on the monster on private land.

It just depends on how much hunting pressure the land gets during the year, Down here theres tons of public land really close to my house, this land is GREAT hunting and has some monsters on it but hardly gets hunted, So if the place Your hunting gets alot of people hunting , then You might not want to be to picky starting out

Just starting out..depends if you want meat or a trophy. Antler soup isn't too tasty, but if its brown its down feeds the kids.Benny The Jet;1301687 wrote:Does anyone else hunt public land only? That 1st one always seems toughest to tag.
With a little exp, you can get more picky.

What's all your thoughts on calls/rattle bags? Same for using any wicks or bombs? Do you use them? Any success? With the rut coming up I was told to look into using them.

Get Yourself a Primos can call, If You get a Buck who hangs up just out of range use it a few times and they usually come in.I always carry a Buck grunt too, I use the Buck Roar, but the True talker is good too.
As far as scent wicks go, Ill use them starting in Nov. I use Tinks or Golden Estrus and set the wicks up around My stand usually 20 or 30 yards out

Finally saw the big one and was quite impressed. He was beating up on a little eight pointer. I am guessing he is about 8-10 from what I could tell. the brow tines are tall and has a nice spread. The combine kept him away from where I was unfortunately. I will be going back out tonight and in the morning so hopefully get a chance at him.

Not a hunter anymore, but just saw a weird looking Doe walk through my backyard. She was normal colored up top, but White below and on her rear. Couldn't get my camera up quick enough to snap a pic of her. First time I've seen one like that.

Piebald Deer! Pretty cool! Most hunters, let alone the general population, go their whole lives without seeing one.
