Beijing opening ceremonies is like a NISSAN GT R-

Big time $$$$$. Amazing technology. Fine details.

While the British opening ceremonies is like the Morgan Aeromax-

More "art-like" and remembers the past. Certain touch of class, also makes you think.

The Beijing ceremonies had a few "oh wow!" moments but the Brit' opening made me smile.

I guess both opening ceremonies were great but for different reasons.

The Brit opening ceremonies were well orchestrated, but as usual far too political for a sporting event. The promotion of the British national health care system, for example, was a bit odd.

Let's keep politics out of this thread completely. It's about the Olympic events and athletes participating, not about Obama or Romney.

Been watching some early morning stuff so far.

400IM Phelps almost missing out on the finals because of an unusually fast final heat. But I highly doubt he'd come in last in that heat in the finals. He looked fairly relaxed during the swim.

Also been flipping back and forth between women's soccer, women's basketball and the Men's road race (bicycling). Women's soccer game between Sweden and Japan was sloppy as hell in the first half and only slightly better in the second. Came to a 0-0 draw.

Tried to watch Women's basketball Russia vs. Canada, but honestly, not a big fan of women's basketball. A lot of girls who can't jump and lot of missed shots. Becky Hammon was terrible in the 1st half for Russia but picked it up in the 4th quarter.

Men's road race is kind of interesting as they have good announcers to explain everything and a few good peices about riders. But the majority of the telecast is revolving around Cavendish since he's a favorite and a Brit.

Not a fan of the Where's Waldo uniforms the US Women's Soccer team is wearing. But they look real good against Colombia early.

Cheney got the ball in the goal, but it won't count as she had a horse collar tackle on the Colombian player to get to the ball first.

Fair enough and I largely agree. However, there's no denying the ever-present political element in the Olympics that - like it or not - impacts the athletes, fans, media, and events surrounding the the spectacle.

Oh yeah, but it's not asking much to talk about the sports here and the other shit in the proper forum. While that political stuff may be there, it can fortunately be separated from the competition for the most part.

A post on my facebook about this USA women's game.
Please turn on NBC if you want to see why no one cares about women's basketball.

# 16 of Colombia just sucker punched Abby Wambach in the face and her eye is swelling up a bit.

No foul was called, ball wasn't stopped.

There was a little skirmish right around the 45 minute mark. This could be a pretty physical second half. US players have to keep their cool and not draw cards in the 2nd.

That one will depend on where you are because it's local NBC, and Dish simply uses those local numbers... 3 in southern Ohio and Cleveland, 4 in Columbus, 21 in Youngstown, 9 by Steubenville, and so on)
