I imagine all of the "big" events like swimming, etc will be taped and aired during prime time so NBC can rake in the money. All of the swimming finals are over by 4:30/5 est, guess that's not good enough for NBC.

Somebody better get Michael Phelps a wave runner or he might leave London without any decorative trinkets. He literally got washed up in that race.

The rivalry with Lochte was palpable in the voice and demeanor of Phelps as the former two-time defending 400-meter medley gold medalist was interviewed moments after the race. It was nice to see Ryan Lochte finally break through and take the spotlight front and center.

By the way, that would make a great Mad TV sketch: Ryan Lochte looking over at Phelps just before a race is to begin and seeing Michael on top of a Sea-Doo without anybody uttering a word. Lol, that would probably about sum up how Lochte has felt all these years, being left in the wake of Phelps's enormous shadow.

I was pretty positive that Lochte would beat Phelps in the 400 IM. Lochte has been training his ass off since Beijing, while Phelps took some time off and didn't get serious about training again until the last year or so. When Phelps and his coach decided to drop the 200 Free rather than the 400 IM for his program in London, I was surprised.

I think Phelps will give Lochte a run for his money in the 200 IM, but it'll be tough for him to beat him. Lochte is just in better shape and is the best swimmer in the world at this time. Phelps is still probably gonna leave London with a couple individual golds and most likely five or six medals of some kind, making him the greatest Olympian of all time (as far as medal count goes), but all of Lochte's hard work is paying off. I'd be shocked if he loses in any of his individual events.

John Orozco is an easy to root for gymnast for the U.S. Tough ass life and a good kid. Did very well on the high bar.

Yeah, I agree that it definitely seems to be Lochte's time. I was rather surprised that Phelps didn't even secure a place on the podium in the 400, but I don't think anybody expected him to monopolize the gold in London as he did in China. That was the Olympics of the century -- this and last -- for an individual athlete, an almost superhuman performance that will likely never be duplicated again.

I can't wait to see these two guys go at it again. With the determination and moxie that I imagine Phelps is going to swim with going forward after tonight's disappointment, the races that follow are bound to be riveting.

Phelps has all but admitted that he doesn't give a shit this year, so it's not too surprising.

If you saw Phelps's interview after the race last night, if he didn't before he definitely gives a shit now. He was overcome by umbrage. You could just feel that he wants to crucify Lochte the rest of the way. Will he? I highly doubt it. But Phelps was visibly annoyed at being dethroned by his American rival.

Phelps definitely cares. He just started caring too late.

He took almost two years off after Beijing, and even once he started training, he wasn't really serious about it until the last year. After seeing him make up some ground on Lochte at the US Swimming Trials (won 3 of 4 head-to-head matchups) it seemed as though he was gonna be able to miraculously return to form. The struggle in the 400 IM proved that taking so much time off took its toll. It'll be interesting to see what he does in the 200 IM against Lochte. It's a race where there isn't as much endurance required, which should be a good thing for Phelps since he's clearly not close to being in as good of shape as Lochte. The 200 Fly is a race Phelps will almost certainly win, he should be right there in the 100 Fly, and then you have the relays. There's really no way that he leaves London without getting the three medals needed to pass the Russian gymnast, but Lochte is gonna be the one looking for perfection this time.

That said, when looking at the whole picture, Phelps has the accomplishments and hardware to prove that he's most likely the greatest swimmer of all time. When he was training hard and at his peak, he was unbeatable (see 8 for 8 in Beijing).

Think about it though. You win 8 gold medals in Beijing. You already won 6 gold and 2 bronze in Athens. You've been training your ass off for basically your entire life. You're the undisputed best swimmer in the world. If that was me, I'd probably get a little satisfied and want some time off too.

I'm not criticizing Phelps, but just being honest. Lochte has been hungrier the last four years, and rightfully so. I actually like Phelps better, and will be rooting for him in every race. I'm just hoping that he recovers from this bad performance and makes the most of the rest of this meet. I don't want him to end his great career on a disappointing note.

Nick Thoman from Cincinnati made it to the semi-finals in the 100 Back. I believe he went to Mariemont for HS.

Check your cable lineup to see if they added the basketball and soccer specific Olympic stations as well. TWC added it to their digital lineup (1050 and 1051 in NEO, I believe). We have it up here on CPI Wooster.

Wieber, pushed inexorably by NBC and USA Gymnastics as the face of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team, instead had transformed herself into a touchstone to the other, darker side of the Olympics: The fact that for every miracle there is a dream that dies, for every upset that changes one life there is a failure that will haunt another.

Hansen got 3rd in the 100 breast from lane 8. That was a great swim for him at this stage in his career.

Yep, Schmitt actually swam an American Record, which shows just how good Muffatt must have been.

Ya, so far USA has had a good evening session. Hansen stealing a bronze medal was huge. And a silver medal for Schmitt was about as good as you could expect.
