He actually pitched very well.

1 run on 5 hits through 5.2 innings. Then a HBP, bloop single, walk and bases claering double made it from 1 to 4. Then Downs gave up the inherited runner to make it 5.

I also thought Acta left him in a batter to long. The HBP was with 2 strikes and it seemed to get to him. Molina swung at first pitch and blooped it. Then a 4 pitch walk and wasnt really close. Fell behind Upton, and then a bases clearing double down the line. I thought he should never have faced Upton.

If you can't do the math on it, take a remedial course. I never said he pitched 3 straight innings in every situation. Back then, many times a closer was used for one out as well. Go pick a fuckin fight with someone your own age.

Just looked up his stats and gonna call you out. Gossage ranked in the top ten as a closer....pitched 1282.2 innings and pitched in 619 games in years where he never started.. Do the math, That's well over 2 innings per appearance...not the 1.5 you erroneously claimed.

because those MLB closers are still pitching, not just because they are good, but because they didnt over pitch and blow their arm out as a kid.

next time you bring up something like Fingers or Gossage pitching, atleast do some damn research before you simply remember how they pitched. your age is showing in more ways than one.

and like i said before, its not about their arms being strong enough to throw 2-3 innings. its about keeping the hitters off balance and not letting them see the same pitcher too often and getting a good read.

That's probably true, but it should still be an interesting race with 2 wildcard spots up for grabs. 7 AL teams have 43-45 losses right now. Pretty mediocre across the board.

From 1972-1976 he started games in 4 of the 5 seasons (75 he didnt start any). in those 5 seasons, he pitched in 188 games (584 innings). during his career he played in 1002 games minus 188 games equals 814....where do you get 619? so in 814 games, he pitched 1225 innings from 1977 on...which equals.....1.5 innings per game.

even if you go straight up, games played and innings pitched, he still only averaged 1.8 innings per game....which is less than 2 correct?

You need to google Goose Gossage stats. He didn't start in has last umpteen years. I added up his numbers during the years that he had zero starts....he pitched over 2 innings per relief appearance. End of debate.

Bull. Gossage and Fingers logged twice the innings as today's closers...and many pitched 15 years plus.

Again...BULL. The scoreboard clearly shows that the ERA was not effected by yesteryears closers versus todays 50 innings a year closers. Use your google button....and learn something.

In 1975, Goose Gossage pitched in 62 games had 26 saves in 142 innings. That's 2.3 innings per relief outing. The following year, he started games. The year after that he never started and pitched well over 2 innings per relief appearance....for over 15 years. Compare that with today's pussies...Rivera, Perez. Papelbon, Nathan, Cordero....all one inning vaginas.

Goose sure did "blow out his arm" lasting only 23 years in the majors. LOL.

he pitched in 814 games where he did NOT start. reading fail Mr. Wedge.

i used the stats from MLB.com(which i looked and are the same numbers you use). even if you use the years he did start(which would increase his average), he did not average more than 2 innings per game. please explain to me in what universe 1802 innings can be divided by 1002 games more than 2 times?

Fingers converted 75% of his saves
Gossage converted 73%
Sutter converted 74%

Perez converted 84%
Rivera converted 89%
Hoffman converted 88%
Mesa converted 83%

Goose....only played 22 years....now i see why your math is so bad.

and in his last 7 years, he pitched 326 innings(averaged 46 per year) in 277 games for an average of 1.17 innings per game. let me guess Mr. Wedge, you will tell me those stats mean his arm was just as strong during the last 7 years as it was during the first 7 years?

I listened to the game today while driving. Until the team is willing to pay position players who wouldn't be playing Double A ball in any other organization, I don't see the post all-star game woes ending.

Two shut outs on this road trip is unacceptable.
