Principal is on one major power trip here. The kid was planning on going to practice but because of the draft needed to have his phone with him. Principal said no so the kid had no choice but to miss the practice. Now he can't walk.

A quote from the dad:
"It's a no brainer. He shouldn't have even been there. But he was at least willing to go if he had his phone in case they call, and his coach tried to work with the principal and she wouldn't have anything to do with it," Buttrey said. "So it's not like we didn't try. We tried to do everything we could. We tried to be flexible. We tried to go to that practice. AND deal with these million-dollar negotiations. And they didn't want to do that! So this is ridiculous."

We had a baseball game on the day of our graduation. We missed all but the first 5 minutes of it so we could go and take BP before the game. We were the lucky ones!



Bet if it was a guy principal it woulda been different.

Why anyone would be upset that they couldn't walk at their high school graduation is beyond me. It sucks, kid should be happy; graduating high school is not an accomplishment. Graduating college is barely an accomplishment anymore.

I think it's about time to drop all these "ceremonial" events like graduations. They cost a lot of money. There are always complaints. No one is ever satisfied, it seems.

No one enjoys them. They are long, boring, and most of the times too hot and crowded. Everyone just wants to leave once their kid, friend, etc. is done anyway. Just give 'em a piece of paper and go on with life.

This isn't true at all. I'd say there are very few, if any, rules for which there aren't exceptions.

There should be a walk when someone gets a job with a salary. That's an accomplishment these days for anyone other than STEM majors or medical shit.

How bout those kids in some district who have to do 20 hours of community service before they can get their diploma because their families yelled and such too much!!!!!!!!!!!!

He needs to have his phone on him so he could answer the phone in case he was DRAFTED BY A TEAM IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL which tells me he was probably pretty successful in high school and was a great representative of the high school. Seeing how the parents, kid, and coach was trying to work this out, the principal was just being stubborn and a bitch.

They arent proving anything. They are following written procedure. Who claimed they were trying to prove anything? I missed that in the article.

Based on the article, it seems like the school was in the wrong. It's really tough to know, though--maybe the kid was a jerk and lashed out, or maybe there's been bad blood for awhile. It's tough to say without knowing the facts, but on the surface, this looks like something where the school should've accomodated the student.

I've never met her and wasn't there when she made the decision, so I can't comment on her demeanor. I'm also not sure the school is looking for "representatives". Isn't it a public school?

Mindlessly following written procedure for the sake of following written procedure seems like a bad idea. Rules don't have innate significance; they're significant and meaningful only to the extent they provide for some sort of social or moral goal. That's not to say the school was wrong here--it looks like it, but we're probably not getting the whole story. But still, the idea of following rules for the sake of following rules seems a bit silly.

I'm pretty sure schools want their students and especially their athletes that travel to other schools representing them to be good and be successful. This kid seems to be definitely successful.

Isn't it funny that the kid asked to have his phone with him? Do you know how many kids I've seen in the halls during class with their phones in their pockets or something?
