It's high school, not the federal government. It should be handled on a case by case basis.

The rest of your post is wishful ideology at best. *It' a school system, not a court system. *A student is either in class or not in class; either fighting or not fighting, etc and students who follow that setup are allowed to graduate. Special circumstances are handled separately, costing additional time and money. That's the current system. If voters want to implement and pay for a different setup then so be it. Any family who doesn't like it has the option to use a parochial or charter school.

The school most certainly does play a part in making sure students meet graduation requirements. Isn't that what Guidance Counselors are for?? Sure, the students are responsible for doing the work, but to say graduating high school is solely on the shoulders of the student is a bit ridiculous.

Certainly, as it applies to the entire student body. My comment applied to this single student.

If anything is ridiculous, it's IWP blaming the school for not letting this kid know he was missing too many days, which I'm pretty certain they did.

So rules are always to be adhered to with no thought whatsoever put into the context of the situation?

And I did propose an alternate solution. It's called actually look at what's happening. Every single kid in that school has an adviser assigned to them and that school isn't large at all. You bring that kid in and ask him why he's missing so much class. He explains the situation, you verify it, and then YOU LET THE KID FUCKIN WALK AT GRADUATION BECAUSE HE WAS HELPING HIS CANCEROUS MOM AND YOU ARENT HEARTLESS BASTARDS.

I still think people aren't understanding why their is such a thing as a zero tolerance policy. There are always going to be cases where someone is jipped by the strict rule, but they are necessary to protect the idea of favoritism and so they aren't liable for lawsuits.

It's not like you asking your manager at McDonald's for 3 days off because your gerbil died and he denied it, but granted it to a co-worker who needed 3 days off because his grandmother died.
