I don't mind the contract, So what if they may have overpaid BP a little bit. They are finally willing to spend money & would have been criticized for not re-signing him as well. BP & Votto locked up long-term, hopefully that can convince future free agents that the Reds will actually spend money & want to win.

Great move by the Reds. Signed both fan favorites to long term deals. Looking to win. Gotta spend money to make money, and the Reds are doing that.

Good commitment effort by the Reds but I'd prefer 3 years about $40 million

I don't really like the contract year wise. But I'm still glad they resigned him. In about 3 years when billy Hamilton is ready they can trade him if need be. Phillips that is.

Either Castellini has been hoarding money or there is a big TV deal in the works. Love that they have the main attractions(Votto, BP, Bruce, and Cueto) locked up long term though.

When ya have a star like this, and votto, ya usually have to spend more and have it longer than ya really wanted it, but if not you then someone else will.

They are doing what it takes to really make this team a force now, and in the future. They have their core guys and they are locking them up and that is what ya need to do to have a lengthy run at it. Some got anxious when they werent doing anything last offseason and last year, but it looks like they had a master plan.

I dont know of they are on the verge of having a big tv deal come through, or if they are positioning themselves to go to FSO and ask for a whole helluvalot more.

Walt is saying that the Reds added a year in order to get the deal done.

Also, BP will be out 3-4 days with the hammy from last night.

Good move but the years would worry me a little with BP being 30. I wonder how the contract breaks down...

Love this deal, actually a lot more than the Votto contract. BP is worth about $15mil/yr right now so as long as they get a few more great years it will be well worth it.

Good for the Reds bringing back Votto and Phillips. I'm not gonna lie, as an Indians fan I'm pretty jealous. If it was the tribe, Shapiro probably would have traded Votto for Matt LaPorta and Phillips for Jason Donald and Lou Marson. Ugh.

BP's people probably got a sense of urgency when they saw BP walk slowly off the field. Can't help but think that might have made his people a little more receptive

Doubt that. I can't imagine Phillips would've gotten a better deal anywhere else.

This.

I am alo going to guess it is going to cost a little more to buy fresh produce from the Catellini group and the cost for beer at GABP is going to go up.

I've heard the new tv deal will be worth almost 30 more mil a year. That means they can spend between 110-120 mil on payroll once that happens
