I've always hated hwen coaches do that, but when Andy Reid was doing an interview last year and responded to the question what do you think the biggest reason you went 8-8 this year with "because we lost 8 games and won 8" I wanted to run him over with my car.

They're just standing up for their guy so i don't fault them for that - I didn't expect the smith comments though so i agree on that part. Personally, i just think it's a little dirty to come across the middle with your leg out like that, even if he did hit him shoulder first.
