Numerous sources are reporting tha K-State's Frank Martin will be named the head coach at South Carolina.

He'll fit right in.

On Monday, Martin's agent, Richard Katz, told the Kansas City Star "we have had conversations" with South Carolina but stopped short of confirming a deal was in the works. The State of Columbia, S.C., has also reported Martin's pending hire.The Gamecocks fired coach Darrin Horn earlier this month after his team finished 10-21.
"In the age of social media that we live in right now, it's crazy," Martin said Sunday. "I was scheduled to be at a press conference today in South Carolina and I was sitting watching a show in New York City last night. And obviously I'm sitting here with you guys today, so it's. ... The stuff that gets out these days, I look at it as a compliment that we're doing our job the right way at Kansas State that these sort of things get out."

Yeah. Choosing to go from a school you've made a good program (not great, but really good considering they're right in KansasLand) to a crappy program in an overall blah conference (SEC = top heavy with a couple really good teams...followed by a bunch of mediocrity and worse) isn't what you'd expect to read about.

This was a done deal last Wednesday or Thursday. It was very strange watching him over the weekend. Representing a school knowing Monday he was bailing for another job. What is very interesting is that no media outlets reported the "rumors" knowing he would be on national TV covering the tournament.

Had this been a bigger profile job, I can guarantee you Andy Katz or someone at ESPN would've been on top of it, and it would have been scrolling on the "Bottom Line."

From what I've read, Martin isn't very fond of K-State's AD and the bad blood finally spilled over. Location-wise, moving from Manhattan to the southern East Coast is definitely an upgrade. Manhattan is literally a cow town. Tradition and career-wise, the move is a major downgrade.

South Carolina is a rest home for coaches. Frank McGuire, Bill Foster, Dave Odom and even Eddie Fogler, all very good coaches (McGuire and Foster national championship caliber), all vanished without a trace after taking over the Gamecocks.

The only positive I see here is that future of the Big XII seems to be up in the air. So the move makes some sense for Martin in that respect.

Yeah. The only thing I really remember South Carolina doing in basketball was 15 years ago when they had a really good team, got a #2 seed and were beat in the first round.

Oh wait...second seed, beat in first round...too soon, Rec? My bad.

Nah. I must have misplaced that memory due to the oodles of championships.

John Groce to KSU? Step up, still in the Midwest where he's only ever coached/recruited basically, not a disaster internally like Illinois, and avoids loaded B1G and Matta (from listening to them talk, they seem to have no desire to ever coach against one another unless they absolutely have to).

KSU will have trouble getting Smart or Stevens to budge either. Groce won't be their first choice, but I would see it coming down to him at least being considered after all the big names won't move.
