The NCAA confirmed that Syracuse self reported the violations several months ago.

Per ESPN, these allegations do not pertain to any player on the current SU roster. So that's refreshing. I'm glad, because this is a very good team and I wouldn't want to see anything dampen its success.

I think this will disappear.

I'm getting annoyed with yahoo sports. They've found their niche to be certain. I am just tired of their timing of their "news" releases, and this is just one illustration of it.

I doubt it disappears. The NCAA won't think twice about punishing future players due to what past players did.

How can you be annoyed with Yahoo sports? Heaven forbid a sporting news outlet actually do investigative work and report real sporting news. As far as the timing issue, there are two ways to look at it. They look at programs at the top or going up as it will be more of a story when they get busted. Or they have stories or leads on different programs just sitting around. But pursue them more intensely when a program is at a high point because it generates more reaction/readers.

I can't fault them either way.

I honestly don't know. I follow several Syracuse writers on Twitter and they haven't speculated anything yet. I think it was Dennis Dodds last night who tweeted something to the effect of,"Would this be the first time NCAA punishes a school for hiding drug positives since Baylor? RE: Syracuse"

I did see that an NCAA spokeswomen came out and stated that Syracuse "appropriately self-reported the potential violations to the NCAA more than a year ago." ESPN initially reported that Syracuse self reported to the NCAA "several months ago."

I also saw that the NCAA could invoke the "Willful Violators" clause and bypass their statute of limitations to penalize Syracuse if they choose to do so following the inquiry. I haven't seen potential penalties and the last time that happened was to the Baylor b-ball program in '05. I'll have to look up their penalties.

Looks like Lack of Institutional Control could be what they get hit with. SMH

Syracuse could also be charged with lack of institutional control for failing to adhere to its own drug policy, similar to sanctions recently levied against Baylor University. A wide-ranging NCAA inquiry into the Bears' basketball program in 2005 revealed the athletic department failed to follow its established guidelines by concealing positive marijuana tests for three players.

As with Ohio State, the initial report is inflammatory. The NCAA may not be able to substantiate much of it. The ultimate severity for Syracuse is unclear. At the very least, this was not what the school needed directly following the Bernie Fine allegations. The timing resembles another bomb Yahoo! dropped on Connecticut basketball in March 2009.

Thanks for the information, killer. I can't recall exactly what the ramifications were for Baylor after the program was found guilty for not maintaining institutional control, but Baylor was also found to be supplying players with illegal payments so I imagine the penalities(if any) levied against Syracuse wouldn't be as severe.

UConn is banned from the 2013 NCAA Tournament for its recent troubles, but that was because of widespread academic underachievement over a number of years. Also, throw in an organized ring of laptop thefts orchestrated by former starting point guard Marcus Williams and the Huskies deserve anything coming their way.

I don't think Syracuse is facing that type of punishment. I guess we'll see.
