Isn't that the crazy thing about wrestling? It was clear to 2 refs he did not lose control!

A great weekend. Sad week for my boys school as no one qualified, but it was still an amazing tournament to watch. The central district seems to be making a turn towards catching northeast Ohio. Saw a lotta tough boys this weekend. Can't wait for Central Ohio to get it done next week.

Word at the D2 district was that Olentangy provided the weight sheet from their tournament but another school produced a sheet from the same event that had a different weight listed. Any truth to that?

Two most "Exciting" wrestlers......Alexander, and Bowens. Kudos to Bowens....loses first match and comes back with 5 pins today to capture 3rd place.
Pickett is so good that he is kind of "taken for granted"......talk about being in control, wow!

Did anyone notice that Alexander scored 21 points all by himself; that number matches the total scores for two other schools! Nice to see a city league kid be so dominant. I hope he has a good run at the state tourney.

Wow, is marysville loaded! The central ohio refs need to take a strong look in the mirror.
As for the other issue, i agree, it should be over. The people i talked to said that it was all b.s. and that olentangy got screwed, including the ref that conducted the weighins at olentangy's tournament. Sounds like the ohsaa made a bad decision. I dont know the olentangy coach, but the people i know that do know him pretty well say he is a class act and a heck of a good coach.

Alexander got put on his back and should have been pinned in his semi...sloppy. He tried the flying squirrrel in the finals bout. Looked kind of ridiculous. Bowens..had a really weak conso group at 170. Will not place at states. That 170 group from the other districts around the state were a whole lot stronger than here. Pickett is a monster and great young man no doubt there.Dad4Sports;1095969 wrote:Two most "Exciting" wrestlers......Alexander, and Bowens. When should he have been pinned? When he was in double chicken wing by the out of bounds line???, because no actually he was bridging up on the top of his head and no part of his back was touching the mat. I was sitting front row center for that and in no way was he close to being pinned. He is a physical and athletic wrestler. Why hate on him? Because he broke mcdougle? No way. He beat him fair and square. Wrestled physical and hard the whole time. He shouldn't have lost and he didn't. Just saying. The kid is good and because he is city league don't down grade him.Sid;1096022 wrote:Alexander got put on his back and should have been pinned in his semi...sloppy. He is just a tough kid, and the better kid won. He will place at the state tournament. Forrider , Ryan, and Alexander will place.

Alexander was not pinned. I think he would of won big if not for all the blood delays. I think he places at state too.

It was a close match, being a MTV fan I felt like Riley got the short end of the stick. Best thing is, they both go to state where they might get a rubber match.snugglyhippo;1095901 wrote:Isn't that the crazy thing about wrestling? It was clear to 2 refs he did not lose control!

Sid I normally enjoy reading your posts but this one seemed to have a taste of bitterness in it. Alexander goes out there and gets after it and makings things interesting, this when he through forrider to his back in the sectional finals. Sloppy or not, kid gets work done.Sid;1096022 wrote:Alexander got put on his back and should have been pinned in his semi...sloppy. He tried the flying squirrrel in the finals bout. Just some thoughts from the 2nd greatest tournament of the season! (Obviously, The Cruiser Invitational is #1 on the charts, and in our hearts, but whatevs)...
Overall, good experience for our 106 pounder. What I loved was when we were upended by Riley in the first round (nice win there, young man) our kid said it happened too fast and that he felt like he could have lasted 6 minuted with him. I like that confidence and it's nice to see him affirm what we thought... just a bit under-experienced.
For the others - and oh how there are others! My body is sore today from sitting on the bleachers for hours on end, taking in great wrestling from Central Ohio.
106: Rahmani is a gamer. What a great kid. ...I thought 106 was very deep going in to sectionals. As it turns out, it was a bit deeper than I thought. I think guys like Transue (DJ), McGrath (HB), DiSabato (WN), Torti (O) and I'll throw our kid Laney (GM) in there are all pretty solid kids who were left out of the top 6.
How about Hines (WC)!? Just about everywhere I went the last two years, he was there. Clinics, camps, tournaments... there he was. And guess what... it paid off. Not in the biggest way, but certainly very nicely. District placer is a nice title to make him even hungrier this off season.
113: I tried telling some friends of mine - like playground legend - and a few others that Spearman is good. I'm not sure why they don't listen to me. They say something like "time slot hit" and "one trick pony". Okay... Okay... We'll see come next Saturday night, yeah?

Also, how about FRESHMAN Borton (OO)??? Rather nice wins along the way to becoming a State Alternate. Had what appeared to be a bum wheel (knee) and still managed to place... and as a freshman? Nice!
120: Penzone did very well in this tournament. Three major decisions and a win by 7... I think it was Adam Sandler who said, "Not too shabby." (Cleary a different context but I do like the line.)
I thought Shoemaker (GC) wrestled well. Nice win over a tough Richeson (DS) in the quarters and then beats Kakos in the go-to by a point or two (I couldn't really see the match - could barely see the score since I had moved down to the floor) but a win over Kakos is good. Especially if it gets you to the Show.
Sidenote: Bleachers: Disadvantage... the feeling I have today. Advantage: The view. I'm 5'10" and it's impossible to see all four mats from the floor.
126: I thought the finals match was good. Both are EXCEPTIONAL wrestlers and my guess is they've wrestled each other a time or two in the past.
Wilson (HDav) is one heck of a talent and it's nice to see him healthy this time of year. McCurdy (DH) was able to pull one out with what had to be less than 10 seconds left against a solid Donatelli (HD). Kudos to freshman Driscoll on his placement at Darby as well. Heck of a job, young man.
132: It really wasn't my plan to hit every weight class, but oh well... McDougle (of one form or another), Strope, and Nace have all been right there for the past 2 and 3 years. Strope got in as a frosh and is back again. Nice to see it all come together for them.
On my predictions, I had Yarger losing first, then winning in the go-to. Turns out, it was the other way around. But I had a very good feeling that whoever (whomever???) won on Friday would be hard pressed to win on Saturday. Kudos to both men on placement, and "atta boy" to Schulze for qualifying.
The winner of the "Feel-good story #1" goes to Durieux (WN). District Alternate. Gets in. And then places! Nice. Very nice.
138: Holy heck! Very impressive tournament by all involved. Start with Forrider. Very nice win over Ryan in the semis and then again, in the finals over an excellent Alexander. WOW!!! Ha - He tried a Flying Squirrel!!! And good on ya, mate for trying it! The crowd seemed to appreciate it.
Another tough freshman is Miller (L). My bad... State Alternate Miller. Gotcha.
145: Much closer bout between Boyd and Luft this time, and it was all heart. Great job to both. Prior to this year, I do not think I had seen Fosco wrestle. They were down in D-II (not that they were actually below us, but you know what I mean) and we never crossed paths with them. All that to say, this kid is pretty good!!! Just does his thing, and does it well.
How about Sunkle (PC)? After losing his first match to Austin (DJ) he goes through the consos with 3 straight majors and then a very hard-fought battle with Driscoll (HB) - who I'm pretty sure made the state tournament last year. And how about Dublin Jerome having it's mascot there!?!?!?! I loved it!
...just took a break to check out some pairings for the state tournament. Rough for some, "Pleasant" for others...
152: What a finals match!? The place was electric. Both are tough, and I think both place this weekend.
Which brings me to a question I was asked... shortly after (or towards the end) of the District Tournament, I was asked, how many weight classes at Darby have multiple placers at the Schott. My opinion was/is this is one of them. I also thought.think 106, 138 and 285 will. 126 was also there. Anyone else have an opinion on this? 145???
160: "Feel good story #2" - and now that I think about it, just about every kid making the state tournament should be a feel good story! The Nace's, McDougle's, Wilson's, etc... they all are. I'm not 100% why I singled these out, but I did. Oh well. Anywho, I was sitting near some non-Warhawks when Brown (WC) was wrestling his semifinal match. After the pin they were wanting to know where mom was! About 20 minutes prior, she was sitting right between us. We located her and got her the necessary madical treatment (kidding). But congratulatons, Mom and Pop Brown. A lot of travelling to make this dream a reality. Especially after coming so close for two years.
Daniels (OL), Walker (HD) and Bond (L) finish the weight class for qualifiers. COngrats, gentlemen. Best of luck next week.
170: Just to clarify... Pickett is good. Now that that is cleared up, how about the Gales of Lancaster sending them in back-to-back weight classes!?
And Bowens!? First round loss and then pin, pin, pin. Another pin in his go-to and then WBF in the finals for 3rd!? Coach Moody: run a simulated match just prior to the start of the state tournament and have him lose!!! State Champ, baby!!!!!!!
One last thing... Hall (O)... Freshman State Alternate. I'm noticing a trend.
182: Leidecker is the champ after a (perhaps) closer-than-expected semi. In the other semi, I had Foster v. Adu... Boy was I wrong!? Pfarr and McGrath battle for 3rd with Schackelford winning the alternate spot.
195: All season long, the top wrestlers were rotating. Now that the dust has settled, Mayberry is top dog. Probably should have went with lead wolf in the pack to tie in their mascot, but oh well. Chowoe (PC) does not disappoint.
Marysville's Taylor ends up 3rd place as 1/8th of a stellar squad heading to the Schott. Kitchen wins in DRAMATIC fashion in his go-to match. Last 5 seconds, maybe???
220: Most people I talked to had King and Stinemetz in the finals, so no big surprise there. What I found funny/neat/odd(?) was that both the 1st and 3rd place matches went to overtime! I don't think that had happened yet. Moreover, I bet I'm the only person to notice/care!!!
285: Pat "the Bully" Elflein* wins 6-3 over a tough Young (O). Earlier I had mentioned that "The Bully" was the only undefeated wrestler in our district tournament. It was then relayed to me that he hadn't had an offensive point scored on him all season. Hmmph. Impressive! So I snatched a single leg and took him down! HA!!! Not really... I used a double.
Fleming and Thirkield (who I've decided to call Thirks or sometimes the Thirkinator) round out the qualifiers for this weight. Best of luck to the Hogmollies at the Schott.
Quick shout out to Akutsu (DS)... he made things very exciting! Job well done, young man.
*The Bully is not original with me. Somewhere on this thread Elflein's style of wrestling was described by someone as that. All I did was steal the description and make it a nickname. Props to that poster. All royalties will be forwarded to you. (Not really... I'll keep 10%!!!)
Once again, great job wrestlers, congratualtions on the season. For those that made it to the Schott, give'm heck! For those that didn't... if an underclassmen, best of luck in the off-season. Only 363 more days! For the seniors that didn't make it... No words can really heal that wound. But, do remember... Be sure to put down that you are a wrestler on any job application. #JustSaying

Nice job Cruiser....
Props to Darby for the efficiency in how things were run. After reading some of the complaints/comments about other district sites, it was nice to see things well done. You could see all the scoreboards from all angles, although one tiny suggestion would be to raise the Mat 1 scoreboard higher. At times you could not see that particular board when people were crowded around it. I loved the fact that all 4 scoreboards always had the current bout number displayed.....making it very easy to follow along, and keep up with all 4 mats at a glance.

I agree we need to move on but, Westie no bitterness I just dont think he will place...the flying squirrel? Maybe I need to research the weight class better. But heck half the weight class places anyway. I always support the city league and you know that. On a final note or two. Boyd showed he is a force to be reckoned with. Miller should have beat Delande!! Delande stalled, stalled, stalled and was not the better wrestler in that bout. Now lets move on to states!!!!!

Through the past few years following my son's HS wrestling career, and the various internet wrestling forums, I have been extremely fortunate to make many new friends....some really great people. And after yesterday's action, I just had to make a shout out to one of them...cthelites. I know he and his son are really hurting right now. This sport brings tremendous highs, and unfortunately, at times, the lowest of lows. It seems almost cruel that the wrestling gods could snatch a state berth away with 1 second remaining in the match....literally, 1 second. But that is reality...and that is the sport of wrestling.
When I talked to cthelites yesterday, I did not have the words.....what can you say? But I wanted to let him know that I've been thinking about he and his son today. I know the hurt is very real now. However, I'm convinced that this will make it all the more sweet when that kid walks out of the tunnel at the Schott one year from now.
Hang in there guys!!
