Whats the big deal? We got into a media debate . I just was pointing out that the left wing media is run by Jews . not only that . Most Hollywood studios are as well . Back on topic....

Having 9 years of military service under my belt, in terms of historical significance I'd have to choose WWII with the Civil War a close second.

In terms of which era would I prefer to fight in due to tactics and technology? Easily the modern military. Far superior equipment, technology, and battle tactics learned since WWII make the survival rate much higher in today's military.

...Belly, I like this topic. My personal prefernece would have been WW2 and it wouldn't matter which theater of ops I was sent to or branch of service although flying a P51 Mustang or being a waist gunner on a B-17 is intriguing. Odd not one post about going to Korea:confused:.

Many have avoided one part of the topic: What era of American Soldier would you consider to be the best fighting force?

Was the soldier of Vietnam better fighters than WWII, could our Honored Soldiers of Today be as effective as those who fought in the Civil war or could the Korea Soldiers win in Iraq?

Forget about the advancement of weapons, tactic, casualties and technology but think about the situation of war, battles fought and won and lost and the performance of the soldiers.. Which era produced the best fighting force?

was watching Troy the other night...how about being a warrior back in that time? Spartans, Trojans, etc. Hand to hand combat at its finest.

I have to wonder how those guys felt, and those in the Civil War, going into a battle. Did they actually think they were going to survive?
I know right now when our men and women go to war we EXPECT them to return alive, and that is not an unrealistic thought, but back then how many expected to come home from any said battle?

In the Revolutionary War the men were freedom fighters . They were putting there lives on the line for freedom . Blacks and whites fought for the idea of freedom . many blacks were free men in the north and fought right along side white men . Too bad our countries history let those brave men down for over another 100 years in the south .
WWII men fought to protect our country from invasion . Those men were the greatest generation .
If you talk about the civil war . The civil war only over time has become seen as a fight for freedom . It was not fought over slavery . It was fought over succession. The southerners actually had more heart because they were fighting for there freedom . Just like all Americans did in the revolutionary war . The only reason the North won is because the north had more man power and resources or there would sure enough be two countries today .

Some very good points and I'd have to say in EACH war our soldiers were faced with different ideologies of those we fought.
The Civil War (many died, many captured, and in general a war fought by (for the most part) an un-educated group of men.
WWI, US fighting men faced a new horor on the battlefield (mechanized weapons & trench warfare as well as chemical weapons. These were brave men who fought and died with blind obedience.
WWII soldiers had the greatest motivation with our county being attacked by a foreign power and facing two major axis powers bent on world domination.
Korea might have been the first "real politcal war" in as much as we could have used the same nuclear power we demonstated to end the second world war, but instead used the conference table to negotiate a peace settlement.

From this point on most know the history on Vietnam, The Gulf War, etc. so I won't ellaborate on them other than to say all who fought in them deserve our eternal thanks for the sacrifice they made to ensure our freedom.

So to answer you question, I would say the men & women who fought in WW2 were the best fighting force since it required more Americans to be involved in the war effort.

I dont know how to answer that . You have to calculate the mental prepardness of the men of that era ,but also the physical condition of the men . you would have to think about the desire and motivation of the men . Training of the men is also very important . You are kind of trying to judge the military as a whole during a particular time period in war . In my opinion today's fighting force is the best it probably has ever been . Although some training practices I believe have gone backwords. The heart and desire of the revolutionary war soldier had to be at the top of this food chain . I would also put the soldier of WWII as a very motivated fighter . There may be many misconceptions of the Vietnam fighting men ,but remember we were the occupying force . The peoples of any occupied or invaded land are more motivated obviously . In WWII and WWI for that matter ,we were evicting occupying forces as well as protecting our own shores . Id put the heart and determination of a revolutionary and WWII soldier in the body of a soldier of today . That where I sit .
