Fortunately my wife is pretty cool with everything. Of course, she has know my heritage as long as she has known me. Like you though my features could be confused with several different ethnic origins (people tell me I look a lot like A-Rod's older brother).
I do recall a few people back in the day do a double take when they saw my dad or uncle, but I never heard any comments made about it.
Sounds like you and the Mrs. need a serious heart to heart
She really truly loves me. It's just the fact that she/we didn't know about
IT until after we got married. She grew up in an upper scale suburb of Detroit where there weren't too many ethnic people around. It was the type of place where the thought was "There's a black person, hide your purse." type of place.
As far as our relationship goes, it was more so the fear of the unknown than any actual hatred or something. It's still racism I know. Even with the kids having nappy hair thing, I think the comment came from fear of the unknown... "How would I (long flowing blonde hair) comb, wash, do... hair like that?!
When we went to Shaker Heights to meet my dad and his family for the first time, she was VERY WORRIED because for the first time, SHE was the minority. My dad, step mom, sister, aunt, and grandma are obviously all black. Then went to a street fair that was an African American Art/Crafts type of street fair, so she stuck out with a sore thumb (with her long blonde hair, blue eyes, and fair skin). The comments that I posted above were made shortly after I told her that I had found my biological father and that he was black.
However, I did talk to her about her work situation when she first mentioned it and how serious is it to judge someone like that in her position.
I am going to talk to her about what I've posted to see what she actually says. I'll give a recap on here once we've had "THE TALK"
At least now, it's just some good natured ribbing. I've always said off color stuff about EVERYONE and EVERYTHING before; kind of like Lisa Lampanelli. So, as far as that goes, I'm cool with it. Even my friends asked me things like "Can I say that word around you still?" or "Do you feel any different?" I told everyone to act the same because the fact that I'm dark because I'm black doesn't change who I am. I think it took a lot of people some time to realize that black BK was the same as the "old BK"
