Who do you have in this game? Is Nigel Hayes (freshman) for Whitmer the real deal? Go in-depth about this game and who you have and why.

Greart early-season TCL matchup. I'd rank both Welling and Smith among the top 3 coaches in the City League. Both teams are fairly young but play hard and smart. Whitmer is bigger and it is a home game -- so advantage there. Hayes is further along than I would have thought by now. He is a physical specimen but I did not think his offensive skill set was quite as advanced as it seems to be. I'll say Whitmer by 7 points in this one.

I was impressed with Whitmer's win over Start I would have to agree with hookshot but probably Whitmer by 3.

Central Catholic needs to stay consistent the entire game. They can't have a 17 point lead and let it almost get away like they did against Waite. Nonetheless, CCHS has impressed me these last two games. They don't have much size but they make up for it with their quickness and speed.

This will be a defining game for both teams.

GO IRISH!

Whitmer's starting lineup has no one that is below 6 foot 4.

I felt like these two teams were potential final four clubs early on and I see no reason to change that opinion at this point. Obviously St. Johns is always a factor and St. Francis appears much tougher this season and Start and Waite have potential along with Rogers and Libbey, but something tells me these two teams and these two coaches will find a way. As far as the game itself, I would lean in the direction of Whitmer in a cliff-hanger. Call it Whitmer 64 Central Catholic 61.

This could be one heck of a battle. I don't know who on paper has the edge, but I know you can take out who on paper has the edge. Whenever there is a Panther v Irish contest its a war. Whitmer is young, big, talented and well coached. Central is athletic, experienced and well coached.
I'll take Whitmer.

Same old tired team from Whitmer. Will be lucky to be a .500 team.Has a deep bench and good players but mostly unused.Coach Smith has his favorites and that is that.

60-50, Central. Final. How does Lehman get to the basket so often? Why can't Whitmer get the ball inside to either of the Hayes boys a little more often and in position to score? Is this Irish team a sure-fire final 4 team or is it too early to say that?

I think that Coach Welling will have the Irish in their usual contending position when the smoke clears and I also think that this Whitmer team will be right there. They are very young (Whitmer) but very talented and there will be games like this when Whitmer's experience or lack of same will show. I wouldn't give up on the Panthers on the results of one early season game against one of the City League's heavy weights.

Whitmer's players just were so selfish. From the stands, I never saw one play even called and there were countless missed layups from players trying to make the play "look good." That isn't how you play basketball. If you showboat on a shot, it is the same 2 or 3 points that you would get if you made it the regular way. Showboating gives you a bigger chance of missing it and that came a lot from Nigel Hayes.

I have to disagree with you chosen. I too was at the game, plus Just finished watching the 2nd half and saw no "showboating", what I saw was hard play and a good player trying to make something happen. Our ball handling was not very good ie the bad passes creating turnovers, giving Central great scoring opportunities. This is a pretty good Central team that played hard and took advantage of mistakes getting the W.
Whitmer will rebound and have a fine season.

Great effort by the Irish. Once again proving size isn't everything.

Too much street ball.No defensive effort.Defense is not just cool blocks but preventing them from getting in the key to take a shot in the first place and there is very little of this.Very little offensive and defensive rebounding too.Major changes need to be made or it will be another season similar to last year.

Nigel has three more years of high school, so please keep the comments coming. They'll make for great entertainment in the future. Before throwing stones at any kid, maybe you should look back and see where your skill level was at this same stage, because Nigel will always be a student of the game and continue to get better. Have A Wonderful Holiday!:)

I didn't throw any stones. I just stated that showboating in this game was a factor and the lack of defense displayed by the entire team is a factor. If a player from Whitmer isn't guarding the ball, they are way too relaxed and let the players do whatever they want.

I have no problem with Nigel -- it just wasn't one of his better efforts. The problem I have is people acting as though he is such a player already in comparison to Jim Jackson and in one story an opposing coach said he "might play in the NBA". As long as he realizes most of his hard work is still ahead, he has a chance to be truly outstanding.
