Inductees were Curtis Martin, Cortez Kennedy, Chris Doleman, Dermontti Dawson, Willie Roaf, and Jack Butler.

Cant' believe Carter was screwed again. It really is getting ridiculous at this point. The whole thing with the HOF and wide receivers has always baffled me.

Andre Reed, Cris Carter, and Tim Brown were some of the best receivers of that generation. How none of them are in yet is mind boggling.

I have a feeling the only reason Bettis didnt make it this year was due there already being 2 Steelers making it this year.

Cris Carter is a hot topic on Twitter right now

Its getting to be a logjam at the WR spot with Carter, Brown and Reed and Marvin Harrison will be eligible soon too.

It's really hard to make a case for Martin being in when none of those receivers are, as he was no more dominant at his position during that era than any of those 3 receivers were.

He was consistent, but rarely spectacular. If that is the standard for getting in the Hall, then more receivers should be in.

I would go as far as to say Martin didn't even deserve to get in over Jerome Bettis.

That's absurd. Martin has more yards and more TDs in 2 fewer seasons.

What really stands out to me is Bettis' YPC being only .1 less than Martin despite the fact that Bettis was used so much more on short carry situations.

Per your usual well thought out rebuttals

Also I'm not saying Curtis Martin isn't a Hall of Famer because he is. Just not sure he's 1st ballot especially over guys like Carter and Reed. Martin was a great back, but a lot of his success was based off of his longevity. Not that there is anything wrong with that but it certainly should be taken into account. You talk about the best power running backs in NFL history certainly names like Campbell and Brown come up but Bettis is in that conversation. With Martin, it was just about solid consistent production but nothing spectacular. I also factor Super Bowl rings into the evaluation, which Bettis has.

What really stands out to me is the fact that Martin has better statistics in every category. In two fewer seasons.

He literally spent the last 3 seasons of his career as a situation short yardage back. That is part of what hurts his per game/season stats. Had he walked away a few years earlier his numbers would in some ways look less watered down.

Yeah its crazy for anyone to say Bettis deserves to be over Martin. They are both great players but Martin was better. It's a crime that Carter didn't get in again.

I do agree that it's a shame Carter isn't in. I also think Bettis deserves to be in. But he wasn't more deserving than Martin.

Well I already explained some of that already but it just always seemed like Bettis' teams relied on him more, the guy was a wrecking ball. Not to mention Bettis played in/won more Super Bowls and had more 1st team All-Pro selections as well as Pro Bowl selections. They're very close, I never said that Bettis was way better nor did I ever say Martin wasn't a Hall of Famer. Had I been voting I would've voted Bettis in first but again that's just me. They're certainly comparable.

Bettis' role in his last few years really watered down his YPC and YPG numbers. Martin was faster so certainly he is going to have better overall yards based off of big runs and his receiving ability. My style of running back is just more of the pure runner and I thought Bettis was better in that regard particularly in his younger days.

Right because that makes perfect sense since I'm a Browns fan . My arguments hold up. Dan Marino has better stats than Joe Montana. Doesn't mean the person who thinks Montana was better is crazy.
