They actually built the new Yankee stadium like the old one on purpose to accommodate football games like they use to have there.

Ohio State already brings NYC. As does Michigan, and Penn St. If they are looking at TV revenue they are looking at a future dinosaur. Internet streaming (via Apple TV or other providers will eventually overtake cable providers) will provide broadcast very soon. This is a very short-sighted potential deal by a baby boomer that lived up to the baby boomer's short-sighted reputation. Anyone thinks that the Big 10 network will be around in 10 years is a fool, there won't be any cable network to broadcast it.SportsAndLady;1323524 wrote:Which is why Rutgers would be a good addition to a conference. As an OSU grad, and a Terp grad (masters), I am torn on this one.
Part of me likes the move, as I can see Big Ten teams now in Maryland. OSU every 7-10 years is kinda nice.
And adds more value to basketball.
The other part of me hates this, as I am not a huge fan of expanding the B1G.
The B1G already has a huge footprint here, large alumni bases (OSU, Mich and PSU have huge bases here), the Big Ten Network is already here, and not sure what value it really adds.

So the Big Ten just basically added another Minnesota and Illinois... Do not understand why they would put money ahead of competitiveness. They could have added these two at anytime, should have tried to put something together to pry teams from the Big Twelve.

The #1 team I would have loved to see in the B1G continues to be Notre Dame.

ESPN Big Ten blogger tweeted about 40 minutes ago that Rutgers, UNC, and Georgia Tech are all in play to be the 14th team. Seems like Rutgers is the choice but interesting if GT and UNC joined to make it a 16 team league.

Now, Comcast Center for bball is very nice.
I wonder if this will apply to all sports as well? Maryland has a very good lacross and soccer team.
This is driven by money though. Maryland is in a deep hole on money, had to cut sports last year.

From a non-athletics standpoint, Maryland is a good to great add to the CIC. At least they go that going for them.

Also, Maryland is a "meh" pick. They're mediocre across the board in sports. This is a money grab.
I still think the Big Ten should've offered Mizzou. They'd be a great fit geographically, academically, and they are decent in sports.

I do think this is less about a short-term fix for on-the-field struggles and more about a long-term fix for shifting demographics. The population in the midwest isn't growing, or is growing slower than the coasts and the south. Jim Delany wants a piece of the action. In 20 years I bet this will look good.
Plus, NYC and DC haven't seen "major" college football - and getting the foot in the door first, bringing hordes of Nebraska, Ohio State, Michigan fans to their door steps could really expand their markets. Overall, even though the teams don't register on the national scale, I think it's a shrewd move focused on the future.

I don't care about football. I care about academic prestige and expanding the fiercely loyal B1G alumni network. Georgia Tech is a top 50 school in the country and makes sense academically.
