Yea, hate to see Alonso's bat go, but he had no position with the Reds. Latos has the style to pitch in GABP.

Latos is an ace. Wow. Look at his splits outside of San Diego. Was it just Alonso? If so, that's a freaking steal.

Why not? He'll be blocked by Mesoraco for a long time, hopefully.

Alonso was blocked by Votto.

Boxberger is a bullpen guy. Not hard to replace.

Volquez. Fuck him.

I still like the trade. Latos is a stud and only 24 years old. We have him for the next 4 years. Cueto, Latos, Leake is a fantastic top 3.

The more I think of it, the more unhappy I am with it. Too much of the future given away, imo.

Reds went all in with their trading pieces on this one and I like it. As good as Alonso and Grandal are, they likely were not going to see field with the Reds with Votto and Mesoraco in their way. The one I wish we could have kept was Boxberger but RP and closers can be had elsewhere. The Reds are getting a very, very good pitcher in Latos. I like him more than James Shields, who the Reds were reportedly after a while ago. Plus, he is under contract until 2016. Now hopefully a deal can be made with Votto to keep him around, at least a 3 year extension.

[LEFT]Ken_Rosenthal Ken Rosenthal

To #Reds fans asking if team gave up too much: Team will have Latos under control for four seasons. Not even arbitration-eligible yet. #MLB

This is a steal. Boxberger is the only piece the Reds have an immediate need (within 3 years) for. Grandal and Alonso are good prospects, but neither had a future in the organization because of better prospects. It's a good deal because the Reds gave up their surplus for a proven ace.

Look at Latos' trends outside of PETCO and tell me you disagree. He's legit. Better than Cueto.

Just absolutely disgusted in this trade.

Never was a Mat Latos fan. During his great year 2 seasons ago, he absolutely crapped the bed down the stretch as the Padres collapsed. No doubt he has great stuff, but I just think hey gave up way too much for him. Especially for a pitcher who is known as a head case and his toughness questioned.

Alonso is a legit major league hitter. I was so impressed with him last year. Not to mention he had been working hard in the offseason to get in the best physical shape as possible so he could be more apt to play the OF. Not to mention we could have gotten Andrew Bailey for Alonso, straight up. But we declined.

Grandal is a guy I haven't seen, but everyone raves about him. Boxberger has electric stuff and I really thought he'd eventually nail down the closer spot for the reds for a long time. And Volquez was absolute butt last year, but has great stuff as we all know. He's also the type of guy you could have moved at the deadline and got someone to pay too much for him.

This is a good post...but a glass half full approach...its still a lot to give up for one guy.

Hanigan is not as young as you think and his offensive production is vastly overrated. Grandal will be missed in a couple years IMO.
