I'm not sure, but you may be reading into it a bit much. They show the flashback of him being in a trench. What was with his limping the last few episodes? Also, something about that episode made me think he never actually went in the military (although we do see his dog tags). There's a call from his mother at the end about "it's time to come home". Personally, I think he ran away at that point and just crawled into a bottle (I assume he was kicked out of school for pummeling his teacher, and going to the military was the story told to Nucky). Now that I think about it, explains his mom's odd reaction at the dog tags - maybe he really did go to the military and she thought he didn't.

I don't think so. There's a lot in these last few episodes. Kind of a blur, but I think I remember him in the recruiting office. Obviously he did go, but I'm not sure his mother really knew that. I don't think that will make a difference.
