I'm not sure if any school has an anti-fighting honor code, but the Office of the Dean at most schools can certainly suspend or expel a student for many offenses, whether violent or non-violent.vball10set;1010912 wrote:Lourdes College? Ad Josephinum Seminary??
Of course if a college chooses that course in a non-existent case, cough, cough

Be prepared to have your foundation fork over a lot of cash in lawsuit claims.
Not to hijack the thread, but it is amazing how stupid Duke University was in that case - I'm curious to know how much they paid out. Maybe Reclegend knows.

I think the Big East will do 5 to 10 games for Gates and whoever 13 is, he is still so insignificant I haven't looked at a name for him. If it would be for the season that would be something Cronin would have to do. He tends to be all talk and if he kicks Gates off that team, they will go 0-16 in the Big East and Cronin will be fired. So I highly doubt he gets kicked off the team.

Based on President William's comment I highly dough Gates gets a pass from the university.

The university may take action, but I still don't think Cronin will be the one who actually puts the hammer down.

Gates shouldn't, would any alumnus want their kids going to school with a guy like that? I'm guessing they might offer a semester suspension, anger management courses and a conditional return to the university and the team next year or else a release from his schollie if he wants to transfer.Little Danny;1010969 wrote:#13 is Cheikh Mbodj, a JUCO from Senagal.

Throwing the ball in the first place COMPLETELY UNPROVOKED would warrant a large suspension in the first place. The sucker punch sealed it.

I agree with your first paragraph but take exception to the COMPLETELY UNPROVKED part of your second. Did you not see Lyons push his teammate to the ground right in front of him? I don't agree with getting into a brawl, but don't act as if the Xavier players were sitting around playing tiddly-winks here.Manhattan Buckeye;1010978 wrote:Gates shouldn't, would any alumnus want their kids going to school with a guy like that? Dez Wells pushed the UC player to start it all. Not Lyons.Little Danny;1010980 wrote:I agree with your first paragraph but take exception to the COMPLETELY UNPROVKED part of your second. Then be a man and try to break up the fight, not escalate it. To make an analogy, if I'm on the on-deck circle and a pitcher throws at the batter and he charges the mound, I can understand racing out to stop my batter from getting hurt.Little Danny;1010980 wrote:I agree with your first paragraph but take exception to the COMPLETELY UNPROVKED part of your second. I don't throw my baseball bat from the on-deck circle at the pitcher.
Gates is gone. His chuck nearly hit a ref, and his sucker punch was in between refs. I don't care how good of a basketball player he is, or was supposed to be. This out Blounted-LeGarret Blount's action by some margin, and Blount got the heave-ho.

Cronin is doing a nice job of deflecting blame (the refs wouldn't stop it, they were talking to our bench the whole game, Yancy was charged!) while acting like a hardass at the same time and saying it's not acceptable.
I don't think anyone is going to be kicked off the team if he has it his way, but definitely multiple suspensions coming. The President could obviously overrule him, but based on his comments I don't see anyone getting the boot.

UC has handed down their suspensions.
Gates - 6 games (joke)
Mbodj - 6 games
Ellis - 6 games
Guyn - 1 game
If Cincinnati had any integrity they would have sat Gates for the rest of the year. Then again, with the kind of players Cincinnati has recruited over the past 20 years, they have shown they have no integrity.

Seems about right, now lets see what the "thugs" from Xavier get.Mooney44Cards;1011184 wrote:UC has handed down their suspensions.

Dez Wells and one other player got 4 games, Mark Lyons 2 and Turn Holloway 1 game. Xavier's seem about right, but Yancys 6 games after Cronin's talk is a freaking joke.

Maybe Cronin didn't have the final say. Listening to Xaviers players in their post game presser's sounded like they came into the game looking to fight.Terry_Tate;1011380 wrote:Dez Wells and one other player got 4 games, Mark Lyons 2 and Turn Holloway 1 game. If Cronin didn't have the final say then whoever did should get roasted for that ridiculously weak suspension. Having 2 others the same as him as a joke.

Now it says in the article that Cronin said he could still add to the suspensions.
Well, if you suspend Gates enough games in the first place, you wouldn't have to add any on...

That's exactly right. Any games now is from media pressure.

It sucks that any further suspensions would have to come from public scrutiny though.

Cronin might as well have just paddled him. That is a joke.
I imagine Tu Holloway's one-game toss had less to do with the on-court happenings and more to do with his Nikki Santoro speech afterward. Still love his game, though. He and Lyons are going to be a tough backcourt to overtake in the tournament.

They sounded completely childish and moronic. But it never came off as "I was just waiting to beat their asses". Mark Lyons for some reason was the only player that was able to calm Yancy Gates down (after throwing a couple punches at other guys lol)

Neither Cronin nor the Xavier coach have the balls to do the right thing.ts1227;1011402 wrote:Now it says in the article that Cronin said he could still add to the suspensions.

The guy who started the fight should be done for the year. Gates should be arrested.
Lyons should be suspended for half the season for just being a dumbass and a gangster...by his own admission.

I like Xavier, but I disagree that they weren't looking to cause trouble. Holloway was provoking UC the entire game. He could've just let his game talk for him, but he and Lyons ran their mouths the entire time.CinciX12;1011977 wrote:No they didn't.

The 6 game suspension for Gates is ridiculous. I'd hope the Big East will step in and add some games to that.

I have posted before and say again, players on both teams are idiots. Gates deserved to be punished.
By the question I have for all of you is why are you putting all the brunt on Gates? He wasn't the only one who threw a punch. Ini fact, there is video showing Xavier players throwing punches at UC coaches. Is Gates being punished because he just happened to land the "best" punch?
I know some will argue Gates' punch was a "sucker punch". But was it? Frease came running into a scrum pushing people around. From other angles, it does not to be appear as cheap as it did on first blush.
