The Rosecrans dropped one at Claymont 49-46. According to the Times Reporter a couple of Rosecrans fans got tossed during the game and tempers were still flaring in the parking lot after the game. Adults need to act like, well adults. I would be ashamed to be tossed from any game let alone a high school game. Welcome to the ECOL. Perhaps a new rivalry has been born.

I got tossed from a summer tournament game 3 years ago. It was under weird circumstances, and there were some who blamed the ref, including the tourny director, but after reflection, ashamed would be the accurate description of the feeling I had. I learned there is such a thing as being the bigger man, and I sorely regretted that I didn't choose to be that. The ref stepped on me twice, cursed at me, and I had no intention of causing him a problem at all, but when he held the ball and stared me down for 15 seconds I told him that he was the extreme lower terminus of the GI tract - and I gave him exactly what he wanted. He baited me and I bit. Well, you live and learn. I don't think I'll bite next time.

Hiland took Worthington Christian apart last night. You never know how they will be playing 2 1/2 months from now, but if they keep this up, BigMirg shouldn't get his hopes up too high. :)

You don't suppose it was BigMirg out in the parking lot??!

It will be interesting to see how Rosecrans handles the physical play on the road in the ECOL. If officials in the ECOL continue to call the game like they have in the past, I could see Rosecrans feeling like that got "jobbed" many more times.

Play the game according to how it is being called. When players get caught up in the officiating, they will rarely do their best. Hand the ball to the officials and play. Let the coach deal with the officials. I think when you see players whining about, and demonstrating against, calls, it riles some of the fans, and increases the hostility in the gym - and we don't need anymore of that!

Rosecrans in foul trouble greatly diminish their chances. They are a very good team but their bench is weak. Losing a game with certain key players on the bench with fouls, they'll feel like they got "jobbed".

Rosecrans is playing in an extremely tough basketball league with big schools that are used to at least some success in the post season, this will only make them stronger imo come playoff team. ECOL literally has 8 teams that could make a run in the playoffs this year.

Much tougher schedule this year for Rosecrans. They are the only DIV team in their conference. Their membership assures them competition against solid DI and DII programs each year. If not this year but future years it will serve them well in the post season. They appear to be developing some new rivalries as well. The ECOL will do them well, at least with the round ball.

At the risk of sounding like a dyed in the wool, biased, and detached from reality homer - I offer the following: The only thing that stands between Hiland and another state appearance is Hiland. As long as they keep doing what they have been doing, it doesn't matter what Rosecrans or anyone else (with the possible exception of VASJ) does. And I don't think anyone who has seen them play, at the First Fed Holiday Classic in particular, will disagree.

breaking down VASJ ....... a likely participant in the D4 regionals at the Canton fieldhouse in March

Watch this game tonight live at FOXSportsOhio.com - tipoff is at 730pm.

Cleveland Central Catholic will invade rival Cleveland VASJ on Friday in a North Coast Conference showdown featuring two teams with plenty of history.

The VASJ Vikings come into the contest with a (5-3) mark, but its losses were to the likes of Lakewood St. Edward and unbeatens Bedford Chanel and Cleveland Heights.

The Vikings are on a two-game losing streak, but still playing well nonetheless.

VASJ will likely start 6-7 junior Demonte Flannigan, 5-11 senior Karl Garner, 6-2 junior Duane Gibson, 5-10 senior Mel Burke, and 6-1 freshman Brian Parker.

6-6 freshman Carolton Bragg and seniors Mike McGarry and Rodney Burse are nice options off the bench.

Flannigan is leading the team in scoring at 19.1 points and rebounding at 13.5 boards a night. Parker adds 12.5 markers. Garner is next with 12 points per contest and Gibson is netting 10.9 a game. Bragg is scoring just over four points off the bench.

Cleveland Central Catholic, a year removed from the Division III State Championship Game, has struggled to a (3-5) start largely due to inexperience and youthfulness.

The Ironmen have faced some fierce competition and suffered defeat to Akron SVSM, Cleveland Benedictine, Bedford Chanel, Mentor Lake Catholic, and Garfield Heights.

According to first-year Ironmen head coach Jonathan Harris, youth has certainly played a part.

“We are some babies,” joked the former Cleveland Rhodes boss about how young his team was. “We are going through some growing pains. A lot of these kids played freshmen basketball last season and have now been thrown into the fire, but we are getting better, finding ourselves, and I think we are due for a big win.”

Harris also gave plenty of credit to the opponents.

“We are playing teams with great senior guards with the will to win,” Harris explained. “When you have seniors with the ball in their hands, they believe they control their own destiny.”

Central Catholic will start just one senior in 6-6 Darion Bruster. Juniors Gregory Snyder (6’1) and Carlos White (6’3) will join sophomores Greg Alexander (5’10) and Shavante Montgomery (6’2) to round the starters.

Lengthy 6-6 senior Alan Harper will lead the bench squad. He will be joined by Stephen Stone (6’4/So.) and Demario Cooper (6’4/So.).

Alexander and Harper were the only returnees, which saw significant minutes last season.

These two teams have had some stellar match ups over their history. Hiland is 11-5 against the Rosecrans. Who can forget one of the best high school games I ever witnessed. The 1999 district final at Meadowbrook. Both teams caught fire in the second half. Hiland ripped off 67 points in that second half and the Rosecrans ripped off nearly the same. They fell 5 points short 97-92.

I have never witnessed a game where two teams were so on fire from long range. Trading 3's and as the defenses pushed them out nailing them from 2-3 feet beyond the arc. You had three players finishing at nearly 40pts. Rosecrans Bills & Whiteman with 39 and Hiland's Kendall Schlabach with 35.
