After looking through the Daily Record previews from last year, here are some thoughts:
  • Hillsdale loses 9 of 11 offensive starters, 7 of 11 defensive starters! OUCH!
  • Smithville loses 8 of 11 offensive starters (returns QB Bates), loses 7 of 11 defensive starters.
  • Waynedale loses 8 of 11 offensive starters (returns QB), loses 9 of 11 defensive starters. OUCH!
  • Northwestern, on the other hand, only loses 5/11 offensive, 3/11 defensive starters. But they were only 3-7 last year, and lose their QB.
  • Using same method (DR Preview) Norwayne loses 6/11 offensive, 6/11 defensive. Not as many as I thought. Wallace and Wolfe are the two big ones, IMO.
Early predictions? Way too early, but here goes:
1. Norwayne
2. Smithville (a stretch)
3. Waynedale
4. Hillsdale
5. Northwestern
6. Dalton (could be higher)
7. Rittman
8. Chippewa

NW'n will be a 7-3 team or better. They have the talent at the least. If Thut doesn't do much with this group... there might be a fuss made about his coaching tenure.

They did lose a pretty talented QB. That team last year had an offense that was far better than the record reflected. Their non-league schedule was brutal (3 playoff teams, two of whom won a playoff game), and they started league play against Norwayne. Yikes! Not counting those opponents' wins against NW, they still ended up with a combined record of 37-9 (41-9 counting the NW games).

The same offense hung 39 on the Smithville defense. Seemed like if they could hit their rhythm, their offense could be dangerous this year. I think it will all come down to what happens at the QB spot.

As for the defense, they gave up some huge games, but they're a year more mature, so we'll see. Until we see otherwise, I think their defense might be the part of their team that keeps them from being a 7-3 team.

I would put the huskies second as well. Solid team with a bunch of starters back. 3-6 could go a whole bunch of different ways.

The QB who hung 39 on Smithville is the QB this year. He is a JR. and was injured the first part of the year last year

In that case, this team should be even more dangerous than I stated.

Nolletti(QB) & Smith(RB) will be the skill guys to watch. Both are juniors and have the potential to be all county.

The big hurdle for Northwestern will be getting off to a good start.....

*Crestview...lost Minnich. That kid was way tough. His absence greatly improves opposing teams chances for victory. They also graduated some other fine players as well. If the Huskies are going to break a multi year losing streak to the Cougars.....this is the year to do it.

*Black River...backyard rivalry, anything could happen in this one.

*Mogadore...Northwestern has never beaten the Cats, it's almost impossible to do in Moggy. At least this year it's at NWN

If Northwestern gets off to a 3-0 or 2-1 start, it could be a year to remember in West Salem.

If week 4 brings 1-2 or 0-3, it will be a struggle to go .500

just my opnion.....the Huskies non conference games are vital for confidence.

one last thing...
Last years defense gave up 293 pts (29.3 per game avg)....it can't get any worse:D (knock on wood)

Crestview has lost an entire offense to graduation and transfer. Also an entire defense and for the same reasons. There is one on Offense who has experience and a couple on Defense that had significant time as well. Crestview will however bring up a talented junior class that was 7-1 as a JV with its only loss to Loudonville (They will be real good this year as well) Look at that game as more of an indicator for Crestview than NW who will be favored in that first week.

I noticed you've fled the Wooster area, hopefully Akron will have a population with a greater taste for cat.

I just read...occasionally, hoping my son is preparing for wrestling. He's working hard....he don't play football so my vested interest is just hitting the friday night lights.

I may venture out into other areas this year to take in the game of the week.

Typical year....Bears are young, slow and unathletic....(que sandbagging comments)

I posted earlier that I was going to run a pool this season.

I am stepping aside because Pitman will probably run a contest covering the WCAL.

Check out the thread he started about the subject.

For the coaches and fellow statisticians out there that read this, I would highly recommend using ScoreFeeder for entering and submitting your stats to the media. I've been using it for 2 years, now, for multiple sports. I also know the founder/owner and send him suggestions, recommendations, and feedback often. If you have any questions, please ask.

Anybody can also subscribe to their favorite teams or conferences, and get box scores sent directly to their email at the same time the media receives them.
