That's not how it works, though. Honestly, if your team has the personnel to run the spread, the coaches had better run the spread. However, if Smithville had tried to run the spread this year, they would have been CONSIDERABLY worse than 8-2, and they would NOT have beaten Norwayne.

Your offense HAS to be tailored to your personnel. The Wing-T works for some teams. Others don't have the right guys to run it, and so they shouldn't.

In all seriousness, though, Smithville would NOT have beaten Norwayne running the spread. Heck, they probably wouldn't have beaten many teams at all running it. They didn't have the personnel to run it, so they wouldn't have done well. It will be interesting to see what they do next year, with both 1,000-yard rushers gone, as well as a daunting offensive line (including two D1 recruits).

I have my doubts about Smithville next year. They lose a LOT of talent, but if the kids follow Schrock's instruction throughout the off-season, you can never count them out.

I didn't say everyone should switch to the spread....I said everyone will need to upgrade their coaching.

Ah! Gotcha. I misunderstood.

Though personally, I think some of the teams you mentioned (more than one of them, really) have done a decent job of coaching, which I think has been PART of their success.

The one critique I would still have of Harbour & Co. is that their playcalling was predictable a lot of the time. A few of us were actually calling the plays in the stands before they ran them. The worst of which was on a 3rd or 4th down and short. Play was Wallace to run it ... pretty much every time. It was working yesterday, but predictable coaching won't always be overcome by the valiant efforts of amazing, strong-willed athletes.

Harbour is young, and he had a lot of talent. I'm waiting to see what kind of coach he is when he has less talent to work with. He did a DARN good job with the team this playoff season, though, and I've already seen him mature as a coach over the course of this year.

Imagine the coaching backlash if they had taken the ball out of his hands at critical times. Hell, we all new what Mauk was gonna do every down. Just didn't know where. Same w/Wallace. At almost 5 yd per, & the possibility of taking it to the house anytime, his feet are fine w/me. Last drive they mixed in a screen, mis-direction run,& a throwback, all for 1st downs. I didn't like that he went deep so much the last drive. Even into dbl coverage. Even if we hit & left Mauk too much time.....,you know. His receivers help his stats. Anything near their hands they caught. For Mr. Ohio, he missed alot of open 1s. I'm gonna hang a pic of Wallace standing firm & tall in the pocket that last td pass. It showed total confidence in his undersized, under rated, line. Both ways, that line produced.
Mauk came in avg. 8-9yds per carry. He avg. 2.4 Sat. Don't think he was used to getting hit that much. He didn't take to it well.

so now it is predictable to give it to your best player on 3rd and 4th down? I ask you please explain what you would like them to do? I am just curious but isn't that what teams are supposed to do is let their players make plays? best of luck to everyone in the winter and spring sports here is to a healthy offseason and putting great work into the next year! WCAL is a great league and it will remain that way no matter what!

I didn't say to take the ball out of his hands. Running the same exact play every time is absolutely predictable. Why not try an option or even a quick pass? Heck, do you have such little faith in the Zimmerly boys that you wouldn't trust them in that situation?

Ultimately, what they did worked, so you can only second-guess it so much, but I was calling the play from the stands, so the play calling was a touch predictable in those scenarios, yes. No need to get defensive. They still won and I was more than happy for them. I was high-fiving and cheering them on as much as anyone around me. On Saturday, they represented more than just their team. Many, they represented the level of football played in the WCAL, and those of us who are fans of other teams in the WCAL were more than happy for them to bring some more respect to such a great conference.

O-Trap is correct in many ways. This team is so rich with talent that they often succeeded in spite of the play calling. Wallace got the job done and that is the fact but do we credit the coaches for that? Jon Zimmerly averages 10 yards per carry for the year. Why not give him the ball? IMO Norwayne may have the best receiving corps in the state. The receivers flat out catch the ball. Running Wallace a million times with the ball is predictable. It worked so the coaches are geniuses. The future will tell us all about Norwaynes coaching staff.

Kevin Maltarich was Ohio Coach of the Year in Norwaynes division in 2008. He's won 7 games in the 3 years since.......and no Coach of the Year awards. Is it all coaching?

Several great coaches have lived by the motto "if a play works run it till they stop it!"

One of the first to say it has his name on the stadium Norwayne played in Saturday.

"If It Aint Broke.....Dont Fix It"....When Smithville beat Norwayne this year, if I am not mistaken in the 3rd quarter they ran the same play at least 10 times......Does that make Coach Schrock predictable or a genius???

I think what was more impressive is their defensive gameplan they used......that really showed me a lot about how far and out of the box these coaches are, which is a good thing.

Excellent point OQB! IMO the Norwayne D was the most impressive part of the game. All 11 guys were very good at their position and gave Kenton a lot of trouble!
Let's face it, this team was very talented and with that type of talent it is hard to lose. I think the staff did an excellent job preparing the team not only for this game but for the entire playoff's. This is one team that all fans should be proud of! Enjoy it during the off season and work hard to be a perennial playoff team and not a one and done school!
Good job in 2011.

Not saying it doesn't work sometimes, and something can be both effective and predictable (enter what Smithville does on 4th and less than 5). I do recall one distinct 4th down in which Kenton stopped Norwayne, largely because they knew what we all knew. They still won, but in such a close game against such a good team, I wouldn't personally be as comfortable knowing that everyone in the stadium knows what play is coming.

O- Trap I some what agree with you. I think #41 is a better runner and faster. It looked like they were trying to get someone a scholarship. Not to take anything away from #45 he played very good, but they have lots of weapons. I would be curious to see how #45 would do against D1,2 or 3 athletes. I feel #26 & 41 would do ok, but that is a different type of player at those levels. I just feel D4 was very weak along with the WCAL this year and many other people around the state feel the same way. Hope they all get to play at the next level. the next level is important to go somewhere you can play and not just go and sit at a bigger school to say I went there. Sure I went to XXXX but did you see the field.

it will be interesting to see what wallace does for college ball. will he try to go big or maybe just D3?
