I thought it was a smart move for the smithies to switch to the ground & pound coming out of the gates to start the second half. #21 was running with authority and really moving the ball down the field. I was not too impressed with Bates. With all the talk on this board about him I was looking for something spectacular. He had great outside speed, not the best passing skills, but eventually the defense had him figured out. Smithville had some turnovers in the second half that really helped out the Falcons.
As far as defense for the Smithies, I didn't see too many good things out of them. They made some stops, but Hillsdales line dominated the Smithville defensive line. Hillsdale had almost no issues moving down the field.
Therein lies the Achilles' heel of the team: the line. That and missed tackles on defense. There were SO many missed tackles.
Honestly, Bates didn't get time to throw tonight, and I was actually pretty impressed with his ability to pass given the fact that he was almost always doing so while either running for his life or about to get hit. The Hillsdale front 6-7 on defense were TOUGH tonight, limiting his ability to run much in the second half or set up to pass most of the game. Still, Bates gets happy feet a lot, and it does hurt his passing ability to some degree.
#21 and #24 are two tough seniors. Both play hard-nosed ball, which I like to see. It felt like deja vu from last year. Tight game going into half. Hillsdale goes up by about three scores headed into the latter half of the 4th quarter. Tolan Shane runs a kickoff back for a TD (I believe he was the same kid to do it last year, as well, anyway). He just seems to never quit.
What concerns me the most about this Smithville team is the "heart and guts" that I've always associated with Smithville football. At times, it seems like it's
kinda there. At others (tonight), it looks like they just buckle under the pressure of a close game.
I'm not sure this team has the mental toughness. Last year's team certainly did, and they showed it in their wins over Mogadore and Norwayne. I believe these kids CAN get it. I just hope they DO.
There were actually a few harsher things I'd begun thinking during the game, but out of the respect I have for Coach B and his staff, I'll bite my tongue on the rest. I'll tell you one thing, despite the hole Coach Schrock left, coaching is one of the strongest points of this team. It's a very solid staff, I think.
