There is certainly a way to discuss this without bashing anyone. I recall a few years ago when the Smithies were down, and people here were calling out Coach Schrock. Like it or not, that makes no sense. The coaching at Smithville was no better or worse during that time, so it seems odd that people would try to point at the coaching as part of the problem.
The guy obviously knew how to win:
- He put together 14 straight winning seasons from 1993 to 2006.
- From 1997 to 2006, his regular season record was 90-10 as a head coach
- He made the playoffs eight years in a row from 1999-2006.
- During that time, he coached the team to a 12-8 playoff record (.600 winning percentage in the PLAYOFFS)
- The team had winning seasons in 24 of his 32 seasons as a head coach (the losing seasons being: 1977, 1978, 1986, 1991, 1992, 2007, 2009, 2010)*
* - Interestingly, the man never had a 5-5 season.
Doesn't matter who you would RATHER blame when it comes to what's true. The track record would indicate that it wasn't the coaching at the time. So all-in-all, I would say it's best to just blame nobody, but if you're going to, make sure you have substantiation, and not hearsay.
Naturally, I'm not saying you've done anything of the sort here. I just don't think I'd "rather bash the coach than the kids." The coaches are investing a lot of their time and energy (and often money as well) to be the coach. They go in knowing they're going to have unhappy parents and players and administrations giving them grief and poor pay in exchange for their willingness to undertake the task of organizing and training four to seven dozen teen boys, putting in long days, staying up late to watch and study films, put together game plans and playbooks, organize depth charts, strategize, and be the administrators of the behind the scenes running of a team.
The coaches aren't in it for the glory, because at small schools like these, they're not going to get much, and most know that going in. Those who don't aren't going to stick around for very long. They do it because they love football and they love the kids.
We can talk about a team's, player's, or coach's weakness. That's fine. But when we call into question their intent, I think we leave the bounds of rational discussion.
Kids may lack focus or drive. That's not to say they're lazy or homebodies. A coach may be tired or distracted. That isn't to say he doesn't care. There's a difference.

I think norwayne has built a program that will keep good football in creston for a while. Lets face it every school in our area have about the same kind of kids. They all put their pants on one leg at a time. Teams will have good years and then some down years. It is just how it works in small schools
Well said.
