Just got back from Smithville. Yikes.
It was a perfect example of how important line play is. Smithville had the more skilled skill players. Buss and Bates did well, and Shane did pretty well also.
The lines, however, got worked on both sides of the ball. Bates was pressured all night in the backfield, and their running game was incredibly effective because of the holes created by the O-line.
Loudonville is a good team, this year. Their line blocks well on offense. Their runners run hard and break tackles. Their defensive line is disciplined.
The bright spots for the Smithies:
- The passing game was surprisingly effective compared to the typical Smithville offense. Bates looked sharp, and the receivers were running good routes and making the catches.
- The returners are good. Buss is established as an effective runner, but their other return man, Blough, looks good too. Very fast.
- Bates is becoming a true full-package QB. Threw well tonight, and ran VERY well tonight.
- The running game was making plays sometimes without having much to work with.
- The play calling was solid. The coaches made what seemed to be pretty good calls under the circumstances.
The dim spots:
- The line is big enough, but they've gotta play tougher. They couldn't open holes on offense, and they didn't plug them on defense. I think the safety had the most tackles on the night.
- Broken tackles were plentiful tonight. With a slash-and-dash runner, they might have not looked so bad, but LHS's running back (Edington?) was a tough, physical runner. If they don't shore up the broken tackles, Norwayne's Zimmerly is going to have a field day when that week rolls around.
- STAMINA! The offense looked pretty gassed toward the end of the game, when they still had a shot at keeping it close or even winning. Walking to the line of scrimmage and jogging off the field instead of sprinting. I think running is in this team's practice future.
Oh, the play-by-play thread:
