They are different models. Football is a true team sport where individual identities are lost. Basketball is driven by the superstars. Fans might not like it, but I bet the league increases revenues with the more focus there is on the larger market teams. The NBA probably has the least loyal fans, because a lot of fans are more fans of players than teams.

I understand why people oppose what is happening, especially Cavs fans. But the reality is that there will continue to be a larger and larger gap from the small market and large market teams.

I think it's fans of all small market teams. There is a reason fans hate the Yankees as well, this NBA stuff is starting to feel just like that.

My point being, the large market teams are the revenue engines that drive the league. Fans can hate the current landscape, but in all actuality, it will likely make the NBA even more popular.

as a casual fan I love this stuff. Last year was my favorite year and this year will be even better. I want to see superteams play. Parity is for the birds. You guys yelling about this stuff can go watch Sacramento - Charlotte see who can score 80 points, I'll take Miami vs. LA, or NY vs. Bos

So to recap: Lakers take Odom out of three-team CP3 deal and deal him to Mavs into new DAL trade exception created in Tyson Chandler deal
Whaaaaat? The Mavs? Why not any other team? Sounds like Lakers are going to battle with the Nets for Howard.

Lakers cleared some serious cap space with that trade. I don't know if they try to make a deal now, or what until the offseason.

I wonder if Odom was in tears about being traded to the Mavs. Maybe he should have learned how to play hard every game if he wanted to stay.

I like Odom's game, but I don't see why Dallas made this deal. He plays the same position as Dirk. Do they use him as a bench guy? Why take him off the hands of your rival?

Lamar came off of the bench a lot in LA as well.

Yes, but he played alongside Gasol often, as he played the 4 and Gasol the 5. Dallas can't move Dirk to the 5. He will improve Dallas because he provides depth and is a good player. But I just don't see him as a complimentary player to Dirk.

Odom did the same thing with LA, he's a solid player and the Mavs got him for nothing. Good deal for them

Exactly. Best year the NBA by far in recent. Go look at the glory years, parity guys. When Jordan was bringing the league huge ratings, parity was nowhere to be found. Fans love greatness, not mediocrity

It's a complete misconception that the NBA is about parity. I think I saw something recently that there is actually more parity in MLB.

And yes, the Dallas trade was a no brainier for Odom. But I wonder if they use him as an asset for another deal. They need to find a center.

Hornets and Clippers are finalizing a trade for Chris Paul.

Hornets would get: Al-Farouq Aminu, Chris Kaman, Eric Bledsoe, and 2012 1st Rounder

This would give the Clips a pretty good starting line up of Paul, Gordon, Butler, Griffin, and ... I would think they would have to match Golden State's offer to DeAndre Jordan because Kaman was the only other center they had on their roster.

Where have you seen this? I haven't seen these numbers. Even if its true, I think some of it has to be attributed to the soap opera the league has become, I'm not sure Melo and Amare playing .500 ball and no defense has any real lasting appeal to a the casual fan. Created some buzz this season, but I'd have to see it translate to multiple seasons before I fully buy in.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden has suffered another setback and may miss the entire 2011-12 season, according to a report on Portland-based KGW.com.

"Following Greg's most recent physical examination and evaluation, we've determined that he has suffered a setback," Trail Blazers President Larry Miller told KGW.com. "We're hopeful, but less confident that he will return to the court this season. We've stood by Greg from the day he was drafted and we continue to do so now."

The Blazers and Oden agreed to a one-year contract Friday, but not the $8.9 million qualifying offer that he had agreed upon earlier. Miller told KGW both sides agreed to negotiate a new deal, independent of the qualifying offer.

"I'm obviously disappointed with the setback, but I'm as determined as ever to return to the court," Oden said in a statement. "I appreciate the support of the Trail Blazers and our fans and that they continue to stand behind me."

The Lakers have seemingly stepped up their efforts to acquire Dwight Howard by dealing Lamar Odom to the Mavericks for an $8.9 million trade exception and a future protected draft pick.
While there’s been plenty of talk lately about the Lakers being the favorites to land Howard, indications are that they remain unwilling to part with both Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum.
Trading Gasol and Bynum would empty the Lakers' enviable frontcourt depth.

I would have done that deal I think without trading Odom. Odom and Howard together is a pretty good front court IMO. I'm sure they would have found another gift trade from the league getting something for nothing to replenish their depth.

If it was for Chris Paul he wouldn't have been but this trade yes he is mad but If they end up getting Howard he will feel better.
