Scheelhaase could be dangerous in Beckman's system.

Congrats if Beckman gets the nod. That being said, it is clear that a lot of better names thrown out there were not interested in the job.

Could work there. All offense doesn't have to worry about defense.

But is Charlie Weis a good offensive coach? You would know better than I Lotz, but he was disappointing at ND and underwhelming at Fla.

I think it was mentioned, Larry Fedora named head coach at UNC.
Baylor outside receivers coach / special teams coordinator Dino Babers will be named head coach at Eastern Illinois (DI-AA).
Justin Fuente is the new coach at Memphis.
Paul Winters is probably the new coach at Akron.

I think Beckman will do well at Illinois -- and as a BG grad, I couldn't be happier that he's leaving Toledo.

If he has the right pieces yes. Was really good with Quinn and Co. Really bad Clausen's freshman year and then really good offensively the last two years. The defense was bad because he used three or four different DCs that all has different schemes/styles.

I don't see Beckman having success in the Big 10. He's a great recruiter but a terrible in game coach. He never won a big game at Toledo. Choked away their bowl game last year, the OSU game this year, and mismanaged the clock the last 2 mins vs NIU this year. He'd be a better fit in the PAC12 or Big12.
Toledo will really miss his recruiting though, hopefully their current class will stay intact.

Strong rumors circulating that Mark Richt is the new head football coach at Texas A&M.
This would create a vacancy at Georgia.

Whoa really? I saw a lot of people denying there was anything to those rumors.

As I indicated, it is a strong rumor right now. All I know is that a lot of Texas A&M people are giving each other high fives and Georgia fans are biting their finger nails over on their boards.karen lotz;1008855 wrote:Whoa really? I saw a lot of people denying there was anything to those rumors.

Wasn't Georgia ready to fire Richt last year? Maybe he said screw you for bailing on me. Georgia is a good job and with theh Florida schools taking hits lately, you can steal some recruits away. Problem is, LSU, Alabama and Auburn have all already done that. In the pecking order, Georgia is what 4? 5? 6? in the South. Lots of recruits in that area, but if you always get the #4 kid instead of #1 or #2, you stay in that spot. Texas A&M has a chance to get the #1 or #2 kid in Texas every year if the right coach is there. It is still a UT state, but after that?

As long as Alabama, LSU and Auburn keep oversigning, Georgia isn't going to over-take them in the SEC.

Agreed. So if they don't take #1, #2 and #3, but also #4, #5 and #6, that leaves #7 or #8 for Georgia. 9 wins and the SEC title game sounds like a pretty good spot. You could always be Ole' Miss...Writerbuckeye;1008949 wrote:As long as Alabama, LSU and Auburn keep oversigning, Georgia isn't going to over-take them in the SEC.

Done deal--Beckman to Illinois

[h=1]UT's Beckman accepts head coaching job at Illinois[/h]BY ZACH SILKA
BLADE STAFF At a 7 a.m. team meeting Friday, University of Toledo football coach Tim Beckman announced to his team that he had accepted the head coaching position at Illinois, multiple players and school officials confirmed as they were walking out of Larimer Athletic Complex.
UT will hold a 1 p.m. news conference with athletic director Mike O'Brien and select players to address Beckman's departure and who will coach the Rockets in the Military Bowl against Air Force on Dec. 28 in Washington. UT offensive coordinator Matt Campbell is the leading candidate to be named the Rockets' next head coach, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.
Players were instructed not to speak with the media by UT officials, but several posted on Twitter to express their support or disappointment in Beckman.
"I respect Coach Beck for what he did!" sophomore defensive end Jayrone Elliott wrote. "He had to do what was best for him and the fam (sic). Congrats and go get that ring!"
Others weren't so understanding.
"Wish ppl (sic) would practice what they preach," sophomore running back David Fluellen wrote. "Talk about finishing strong how are u (sic) finishing strong leaving before a bowl game."
As he left Larimer about 7:20 a.m. and walked to his personal car, Beckman refused to confirm he had accepted the Illinois job.
"I can't do that right now," he said.
Beckman said he was headed home but didn't say where he was going after that. Asked if he would be at the Rockets' practice later Friday, Beckman said, "We'll try to make it back. We'll see."
Beckman said he was not aware that UT would be holding a news conference later Friday afternoon and said, "we'll see" when asked if he'd be soon boarding an airplane bound for Illinois.
"Thanks guys," Beckman said before shutting his car door and driving away.

...and furthermore, for a mid-level B1G team like Illinois, I think a midwestern guy like Tim Beckman is the ideal fit--and he's got a pretty damn good resume as well

A good coach knows that even if he knocks it out of the park Illinois will compete for the B1G championship maybe once every five years at best. This is even more true now with Urban in town, Michigan being back, Nebraska being in the conference and Wisconsin and Michigan state remaining very solid. There are better options out there.
