Article said they have 30 boys in a typical graduating class. What do you want to bet me that 15 (at least) of those 30 are on the football team. Maybe they don't have soccer to compete with, but maybe the boys in that town take their value from being a football player..because their dad, uncle or cousins did it & they want to just the same.
We have 60 boys in a graduating class, and MAYBE 15 on the football team. How can 1 town have 50% of their boys on a team & we only have 25%.
Something has changed in this town in the last 10 years & we're starting to see it. Kids are graduating, going to college & not returning to start their own family. That's how a tradition dies.

I bet that's true too. I know a handful of Smucker employees & a few others that i attend church with. Out of all of those, only one lives in Orrville. The rest are Wooster folks.

I hear a lot of talk about the problem, but little talk about a solution. You can not force an employee to live in the city they work. So are there any real solutions. I have herd Bob Snyder do a lot of talking as well, but very little to help fix anything. Just a thought. There are a lot of local buildings that are for sale or lease and they are not moving. So maybe we should be talking to realtors and put some pressure on them to get them sold.

The city could offer a break on utilities for folks moving to Orrville from another town. For like 12 months or so. That could apply to new businesses as well. Tax credits too.
There are some things the city CAN do...but in the end, the city needs to sell itself. Having a vibrant downtown to go along with excellent school buildings and a fair cost of living and a low crime rate (serious crimes anyway) SHOULD draw people to town.

Well almost every building downtown is being remodeled and looking great. Schools all new. From what I have heard the tax breaks are offered to new businesses so most of all this has been done already.

As citizens of this city, you can voice your concerns to city council. They would welcome more involvement from the public, I'm sure. Go to a council meeting and tell them what's on your mind...probably the least you could do if you have concerns about Orrville. Worst that could happen is nothing is changed, but at least you tried.

For now, we have to play the cards we're dealt and make the most of what we DO HAVE. I say maybe we should have guys like Monheim, Hoobler, Simmons, Hiller, etc. come speak to the elem. and middle school kids on the subject of how their experiences as Red Riders catapulted them to have success at the next level and beyond.

Tons in Wadsworth - such a booming area. Many in Akron, Fairlawn, Copley, Massillon, and a few as far as Broadview Heights and Strongsville. I know very, very few that are Wooster-ites or from Orrville. It's always a pleasant surprise to find one. I can tell you, though, that the company has done some great work moving/bringing business IN to Orrville & Wayne County instead of where it used to be in Cincinnati and out of state.RedRider1;1321153 wrote:I bet that's true too. Maybe Smucker's should offer some extra incentives for those that reside in Orrville! With gas prices as they are, you'd think they'd welcome the change in residence.

Lete recap football careers:
1. Hiller- Played Div 1 football and went to the combine and was picked up by the Colts. Awesome!
2. Simmons- Started 4 years at Ohio Northern, played two years over seas. Awesome!
3. and 4. Monheim and Hoobler-playing LB in the Big 10. Awesome!

What's just as impressive: they were all top notch students as well! They could give invaluable advice about what a student/athlete really is and what it takes to become one. There are also a number of others as well but those mentioned would probably still be "fresh" in our kids minds.

Hit the nail on the head. Great athletes..but also great students & character guys as well.
Never mind coming back to talk to the kids, lets get them on staff.
Need a succession plan for when the current staff decides their time as a coach is up. If we don't pass the levy in the spring, coaching stipends may disappear...and that would make it real tough to keep a good staff on board.

Or we can just stop with all the damn excuses and get the most out of what we do have! It's not like his town and tHis program changed overnite as some of you have said so let's take a 9 loss year and bank on your coach to get back to his winning ways!

Let me give you an example of a team that got better with better coaches. THE Ohio State Buckeyes! A team with a losing record last year with pretty much the same players this year and new coaches and bam 11-0! So yes coaching makes a huge difference! Not even one of the top 20 teams in America as far as talent and they are getting it done-another example is Kent St! So again please stop the excuses in Orrville and look to the coach to get the best out of what he has instead of sitting around and complaining about what he doesn't!!!

Coaching matters. But it's nonsense to compare a high school team to a college team. Colleges can go out & recruit to make themselves better. High schools has to take what they have and do all they can to get the best out of it.
Yeah they're the same players at OSU, but a year better, a year stronger, a year faster....and a year more motivated after going 6-7 last year. Lets give our underclassmen a chance to make those same improvements & become motivated to be the group to bring us back from 1-9 to the playoffs.
Support. It's not that hard of a thing to do.

Your excuses are adding up but no surprise what else would you have to complain about blaming our losses on tough economic times in the ville! That's laughable!!! Talent is in your town and you know it! I told you that already there are kids in your town not even playing for Orrville!
