Not sure if this has changed under sly butt i was told in person by coach short a few years back that they don't practice foul shooting. He left it up to the kids to practice them on there own. As i said i don't know how sly does things, if they still don't spend time on them that could be reason the foul shooting is so bad.

If true about the previous coach not making his team practice free throws, it showed.

I was told by a close source that Sly makes them practice free throws every day, around 30-40 for each player if not more. Take that for what it is worth. I agree with RedRider that Orrville does not have a lot of basketball players just athletes, I think this will be a solid team this year, I think they can get to around 12 wins, remember they play a tough OCC schedule plus Hiland. I see them making a run in the tourny, would not be surprised if they win the Wooster district again. I know we are far away from that but just giving an early prediction. Go luck to the Riders this year.

I would think any coach would not just set an amount to shoot but set a number to make before they leave the practice . Anyone can throw up 30 or 40 bricks, but can they make 30 or 40 baskets without needing 100 shots.

In general..free throw shooting and jump shooting has declined over the past few decades. The 3 point shot is to blame, IMO.

Remember when 75-80% was a good FT %. Now teams are lucky to shoot 70%.

It's not just Orrville...but our FT shooting has not been good in years.

I played for Perry Reese. Several times we would only end practice when a certain percentage of free throws were made. We would all line upon the baseline. Say there were twenty of us V/JV. Coach would say you make 16/20. We would go right down the line. If the 5th guy missed his free throw we ran. Then started all over. This resulted in some late practices. Talk about pressure on the sophomore at the end of the line after three seniors and a junior missed. You are either the savior or the turd that made everyone run.

We had bad free throw shooting at an away game. Off the bus drop your bag and on the baseline. Same drill.

Too many current athletic event participants, lack "work ethic", yet they have ton's of laziness, attitude and cockiness despite how good they aren't!

And the ESPN glorification of the dunk and the 3 point shot. Nobody wants to see a properly executed team offense and a good FT shooter.

Tough game tonight...season is still young.

Went to double overtime. WH isn't as good as I thought and were not as bad as I thought. Both teams shot poorly (in the 30% range). Difference was only in foul shooting and we were worse. Ray didn't play too, bad and only the occasional poor decision on shooting and handled the ball better than last year. Need to go to Winters more and get him the ball in the right position. If he gets the ball in the right spot its a sure two. Landis played hard on defense and shot well on the few shots he took. Dru needs to work on a constant foul shot style. Shaq can shoot better. LOL. Smith not strong enough to play inside and if their playing man to man can't create his own shot. Need to bring Zook in some to pressure the other point guard. To beat WH you have to stop Arnold. We didn't do it. We let him penetrate and get the jump shot. You need to run people at him and double him up top. We tried to do that but just didn't make it work well. One of these days the honeymoon with the officials is going to end. It was better this game, but he grabs to get loose when he's guarded close and charges all the time. He's so slight that he never knocks anyone over so no calls. Tonight he even dribbled it off his own foot and it wasn't called. He is a good player who plays hard all the time. The key to stopping WH is to stop him and I think teams are realizing that.

What is up with Orrville's inability to rise up when we need to and win a big game??

I am tired of seeing Orrville teams(football and basketball) lose close games and/or big games!!

Step it up one time and realize that you have to play 4 full quarters and go hard the entire game...close the game out one time and have a "refuse to lose" attitude!! Where has it gone??

Did i miss a rule change regarding dribbling the ball. Why do the refs let the kids carry the ball now. When i was young if you dribbled the way they do now it was called palming or carrying. They bring the ball up and turn there hands over like there ready to run with it. I know this started in the NBA but now it has made it's way to high school ball. What has happend to fundementals ? Just wonderd why refs do not call it anymore.

Fundamentals, hard work, and ethics have been thrown right out the window thanks to the Thug-B-A, the Gangsta-F-L, and the Major League Steriod Asscociation!

I'll take those two over most of the upper classmen in a heartbeat! They know how to play the game and play hard!

Perhaps some of the kids are too quick and the refs too slow to keep up!

I would assume the Varsity and Jayvee coach work together and the underclassmen are better suited to play a lot of jv minutes rather than sit at the varsity level and not get any minutes in at all. Once they have shown they are ready to contribute at the varsity level in jv games and practices the jv coach should be pushing to get them varsity game time. The coaches see these guys everyday and know how they practice and if they are really better will earn their time on the varsity. But as only 7 or 8 will usually play in a varsity game, I would rather they saw playing time in the jv game than sit all night long.

they are they best kids to be on the floor!!!! Nepotism at Orrville runs deep! Put the young kids out there and exp. success...or stick with the older kids and be happy with .500
