I can agree to this.Manhattan Buckeye;968627 wrote:I do think you make coherent points, but I don't understand why a supposed leader/legend didn't lead.
Why didn't he do more?
Why didn't McQueary do more?
Why didn't the AD/VP do more?
Why did the BoT grant Sandusky his full retirement package given the allegations in 1998?
I can go on and on with questions, and I along with everyone am desperately awaiting answers.

1. We're not talking about other schools, the molesting occurred at Penn State. ONCE AGAIN, name another person at Penn State who has had a Bronze Statue erected in his honor. Such an honor usually happens after you die.bigkahuna;968498 wrote:1. Several schools' facilities have statues of coaching icons, so this really has no clout as to how much power someone has.
2. How did he get those people on the BoT?
3. Again... You don't know what Paterno was told by his supervisors regarding the matter. This is why I'm holding judgement on him until more facts come out.
As much as you hate to admit it, he does not have power over the entire university and the BoT. At the end of the day, he has to fall in line with them as we've seen.
Before someone on here jumps about 2004, when they asked him to retire, why doesn't someone answer me this... Given the fact that he IS the football program, who wants to force him out after a few bad seasons? Joe Pa AS A COACH, was more about winning and losing, and he showed that through his philanthropy, no person wants to bring an end to that.
2. By being the most powerful person at Penn State.
3. Again.....READ THE GRAND JURY REPORT. The Grand Jury took testimonies from McQuery, Paterno, Curley and Schultz. Paterno didn't say anything about McQueary, Curley or Schultz reporting back to him on the Sandusky molestation. McQueary, Curley and Schultz never said anything about reporting back to Paterno on the Sandusky molestation. You're Paterno, you've been told Sandusky molested a 10 year old in the showers. You don't give a shat that no one tells you why Sandusky hasn't been punished?

The Trustees don't think they need to know more. They could have gotten more information from someone and you and I sure as hell aren't important enough to know who or what.bigkahuna;968618 wrote:Manhattan, at least give me the benefit of the doubt of actually having a sound/coherent thought on this matter. At the very least, don't lump me in with the likes of sleeper/reclegend.
I merely think there are more details that need to be known before we can actually put an accurate portrayal on Joe Paterno.

Is JoePa lying?
Were you lying when you said the AD has been fired? Since you have not posted a link to his firing I am assuming your lying. Why would you lie on an anonymous message board?

Do you want to start listing all the statues that have been put of sports figures that are still alive?

Do you think he is ever welcomed on PSU's campus again? The guy is done. He is more likely to serve time in prison than be the AD at PSU.Skyhook79;968888 wrote:Were you lying when you said the AD has been fired? I don't understand why so many don't get why JoePa had to go. It isn't a question of fairness long term. PSU as an institution simply couldn't run the risk of having Joe know anything and letting it slide. They won't know for awhile, so to begin rebuilding the trust they have had he HAD to go. It's just that simple.

Thats not what you said, you said he was fired. He is on paid administrative leave until he has the opportunity to defend himself in a court of law.Manhattan Buckeye;968906 wrote:Do you think he is ever welcomed on PSU's campus again? If it is found that he did nothing wrong there is the possibility he could retain his job. Otherwise why wouldn't they have just already fired him?
I'll ask again why would you lie on an anonymous internet message board.

JoePa settled for a measley $500K salary. He also gave a ton of his money to charity. Given the latest developments, he may regret not keeping his money. After lawyer fees and settlements, the man will probably die completely broke.

I agree with him and so does the Board of Trustees.
Here is his ENTIRE quote: “This is a tragedy,” Paterno said in a statement addressing the allegations against Sandusky. “It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the BENEFIT OF HINDSIGHT, I wish I had done more.”
Way to pick out only the part that benefits your argument.

I don't know why anyone gives Paterno credibility at this point. His grand jury testimony clearly stated he was told something "sexual" had happened in the shower -- but his statement when all this hit the fan was that he was "fooled" by Sandusky.
One statement was given under oath and one was not.
I'll believe the one under oath and just say Paterno is exactly where he belongs: unemployed.

Hindsight doesn't excuse him on this topic. Yes, but in this case, with hindsight Joe Paterno now knows new information. That he wasn't told the truth with regard to how key Penn State administrators handled their "investigation" of McQueary's story. And, also as we know now, Paterno was never told that anything relating to the seriousness of intercourse or rape of a child had ever occurred.
He did what he should have with the information he was given, and, in the end, Paterno, just as everyone else at Penn State not involved in this sickening coverup, was failed by those who he thought were looking out for the best interests of the university. And because of it, a hero's legacy has been ruined. Not in my eyes, but in the eyes of those who have rushed to judgement without letting Paterno share his entire side of the story and instead latched onto the "Let's bring a good man down" crusade that is the hallmark of today's lynch media.
A gloomy week in sport.

He knew that something happened, and he knew the man in question. This man had numerous sexual related complaints (that we know of) alleged against him in the past, so this complaint should have raised a flag for Joe Paterno immediately. He chose to take it to his AD, and then let it go. Legal? yes. Moral? smh.
I wonder if this same "chain of command and forget it" action by JoePa would have been the same had the victim, been, say...Jay?

How do you know he let it go? The GJ testimony has nothing about what JoePa did or didn't do for follow-up. There are 23 pages in the GJ testimony and there are 5 sentences from JoePa total.vball10set;969919 wrote:He knew that something happened, and he knew the man in question. Why would you bring the moral into the legal? everyone gets to interpret that (moral) in their own way.

BS. You keep ignoring Paterno's own words to the GJ that he was told something "sexual" had occurred between Sandusky and a child.reclegend22;969869 wrote:Yes, but in this case, with hindsight Joe Paterno now knows new information. You don't need anything more than that to take the correct action -- which is opposite what Paterno actually did. He took the path of least resistance and least effort.

From the GJ testimony The AD said Sandusky's keys were taken away and that he reported to the head of the second mile what Sandusky was accused of. Shultz testified that he and Curley reported the incident to the Child Protective Agency. It is completely plausible that Paterno was told by 2 of his superiors that he reported the incident to that the incident has been reported to the proper authorities and they are looking into it along with what Curley said was done. You cannot just assume what Paterno was told about what was being done.Manhattan Buckeye;970007 wrote:No one at PSU tried to identify the boy. By no one that includes Paterno.
