That's great and everything, but why the hell would a proud father and husband enlist, to be away from from their family, and enlist in these uncertain times where our soldiers are being shipped to god only knows what???? just sayin.....

Drove to all 48 contiguous states in one trip ( http://www.sykotyk.com/supertrip/ ).

Attended 16 varsity high school football games in three days last year. (4 on Thursday in Wisconsin, 6 on Friday and 6 on Saturday in Minnesota. I can figure a few Minnesotans might have gone to all 12 state semifinals that weekend, but I can't imagine any of them went to the four state finals in Madison, WI and then drove to Minneapolis for the games the next day. And I can't figure any other circumstance ever that there's 16 games in three days anywhere else in the country).

Sometimes the sense of duty is just too much to overcome. Could be financial, benefits, college money, who knows?
And about these uncertain times, these times are motivating to many soldiers. It would be quite boring to enlist in a time when there is really nothing going on around the world that the US is involved in.

That's why I chose the air force. My chance of deployment is very slim and if I do get deployed it would be to Ireland, Italy, etc. and my family can come with me. The hardest part will be leaving my little girl and soon to be wife for those 8 weeks of basic, and then for tech school for about another month. After that they get to move on base with me.

I'm not saying that, there obviously are platoons in Iraq and Afghanistan. The way it is now you really have to fight to get deployed. And if you do get deployed there depending on your job you will be at the base the whole time and never see any combat. But like I said it depends on your job

My own personal opinion.

One shouldnt enlist and expect to not get deployed.
One shouldnt enlist and hope to NEVER get deployed.

Not sure where you got this idea from... my brother in law is in the AF and has been on 2 tours (Iraq both times)and is up for deployment again.

Probably a recruiter. Our DS asked our platoon at BCT how many of us were told that we probably wouldnt get deployed.

I would say 35-40 of the 53 guys raised their hands. Also being in the recruitors office every few weeks until I left I heard many a time a kid being told 'by the time you get shipped, go through basic and ait i imagine things will be winding down' and leading them to believe they wouldnt have a very good chance at getting sent over.

I'm guessing he is in special forces? Mainly if you have anything to do with planes your going to get deployed. I actually wouldn't mind getting deployed but with all the soldiers being pulled from Afghanistan and Iraq by the end of 2012 I would have a slim chance of getting deployed unless it is somewhere like Italy or Korea etc.

Lol. You think we're actually getting out of those places.
