I do think that Robinson is also deserving and, if he did end up winning the player of the year, I don't think anyone would have a problem with that. I do, however, think signature plays such as the game-clinching block Davis secured against Vandy are always helpful toward winning awards such as player of the year. Sensational plays on the national stage are always committed to memory. (Again, not saying that Robinson hasn't had his fair share of memorable performances.) Shane Battier's deflection of a leaping Joe Forte from behind in the Dean Dome in 2001 after it appeared as if Forte had beaten everyone and opened a clear path to a fast break slam dunk is a similar example. The two plays may not be exactly comparable, but they both jump out at me as spectacular acts of athleticism and skill that epitomize the absolute power and influence shared by both Battier and Davis.

Oden also came to mind, but I don't think he had the multifaceted skills that Davis has as a superior athlete. Davis is not only long and an incredible leaper, but also extremely agile and quick and can move around the floor much more fluidly and affect other aspects of the game than could the more stationary Oden. I just think that Davis presents a more difficult challenge in that he can really run the court and add a layer of versatility with his size that not many near seven-footers can.
